The ex -India Pacer, Zaheer Khan, has abandoned his role as a mentor of the Super Giants of Lucknow (LSG) ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026). The former cricket shared his decision with Sanjiv Goenka’s property team on Thursday, September 18, according to a report Espn Cricinfo.
Zaheer had joined Lucknow’s Super Giants as a mentor ahead of IPL 2025. He replaced Gautam Gambhir, who went to take on the same role with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) before IPL 2024. Gambhir was part of KKR support staff when they hit the IPL title in Shreyas Yyer’s season.
According to Espn Cricinfo, Zaheer Khan separated with Lucknow’s super giants due to the differences in vision with the main coach Justin Langer and the owner of the Sanjiv Goenka team. The disagreements and a tense environment of dress during the 2025 season forced him to leave.

“”The main reason Zaheer quit that his vision for the franchise did not align with that of the main coach Justin Langer and the owner of the Sanjeev Goenka team, “the report read.
Khan signed a two-year contract with the Super Giants of Lucknow in August 2024, taking care of the Scouting, strategy and general planning of the team. Before joining the LSG, he had worked with the Mumbai (MI) Indians from 2018 to 2022.
LSG reached the playoffs in its first two seasons (2022 and 2023), but the franchise struggled to maintain the same level of success in the following years.
The report added that the 46 -year -old has a good relationship with Lucknow Super Giants captain, Rishabh Pant, despite differences with technical and owner. However, the poor actions of the team during the last half of the IPL 2025 influenced their decision to give up.
“Although Zaheer’s relationship with Captain Ris Habh Pant remained strong, it was affected by the thought process that played a role in LSG that slid the point table in the second half of the IPL 2025,” the report added.
LSG, directed by Ris Habh Pant, won six of its 14 league games at IPL 2025, finishing the seventh with 12 points. Above all, they won five of their first eight games, but won only one victory in their last six accessories. The team recorded only two eight -game wins at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium.
LuckNow Super Giants made headlines at the IPL Mega auction Signing Ris Habh Pant for a record of 27 Crore Rs. Pant became the most expensive player in the history of the IPL. Zaheer Khan supported a strategy to strengthen the workforce and ensure long -term growth.
There were discussions about the opening of Pant, but Zaheer advised him to get off the order. Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram opened tickets for Super Giants, while Nicholas Polan beat number 3.
The decision was effective, as Marsh scored 627 runs to an average of 48.23 with a strike rate of 163.70. Polan shot 524 rolled into a 196.25 strike rate, while Markram accumulated 445 rolls on a strike rate of 148.82.
