Beth Dutton has come a long way leading up to that explosive Yellowstone ending – ask Kelly Reilly.
Before Sunday, December 15, the conclusion of the shot In the Paramount Network series, Reilly took to social media to reflect on her character’s journey.
“Whatever the future holds this is the end of the show we’ve been doing for the past 7 years,” Reilly, 47, wrote via Instagram. “Words cannot convey how I feel about the people I got to work and create with over the seasons. I have made real lifelong friends. The support of the crew and the trust and dedication of the cast. The words I got to say and the woman I got to live in. It changed me. It enlightened me. He challenged me in every possible way and I will be forever grateful.”
Reilly issued a message to the creator Taylor Sheridan for taking a “chance” on her, adding, “(He) continued to write (Beth) in ways that made me feel on fire as an actor. Thanks Taylor. Thank you to the audience we came for, for being on this journey with us. We were really worried about doing something special for you all… Enjoy tonight, get your tissues and your 🥃✌️.”
Fans quickly took to the comments section to weigh in they think it would happen. Some specifically asked for Reilly’s input on whether Beth would be responsible for Jamie Dutton’s brother (Wes Bentley) death and her struggle for the family farm.
Answer questions before the broadcastReilly didn’t give anything away on how Beth — with her husband Rip’s (Cole Hauser) help – would be the one to kill Jamie, but elaborated on the evolution of her character.
“She definitely changed. In the early seasons (the farm) was a place with too many bad memories. The place haunted her,” she recalled. “She was loyal to her father as she loved him so fiercely but she also felt such responsibility and guilt for the death of her mother, his wife.”
Reilly continued: “It almost became her reason for living to do it right, to do this for him. She was his most loyal soldier. Over the seasons you saw her fall in love with him again. She did it for him. About the land. And for a part of her soul.”
Spectators — including Us — tuned in to watch Beth’s story since the show premiered in 2018. Before the show ended, reports started floating around focus on Beth and Cole. (On Sunday, Reilly made a “true” comment to a fan who asked if the rumors were true.)
“I loved this season. There were some very different territories to explore, so I’m not sticking with it,” Reilly said Town and Country in November regarding plans to resume the role. “I’m happy to put her back in her padlock box.”
Reilly don’t rule out she returned though, saying, “I’m definitely interested in Beth, and who she is after certain things happen,” she said. “Who is she at peace? As an actor you’re like, ‘Ooh, let me do that.’ Wouldn’t it be fun to watch Beth go to therapy?”
The actress expressed her gratitude for getting a chance to play a complex woman on screen.
“I love getting ready to play it, because Beth has an adrenaline rush and is full of energy. But it’s also extremely gnarly. I have to hide all of me to put some of that on. I love her, but I can’t live with her,” he continued. “This is not just a strong, capable women’s game. That misses the point. Male characters can be messy, but they can still be heroic. Full spectrum. And I think there is courage in embracing a shadow. How can you be an honest person if you don’t own some of your darkness?”
