Kenya President William Ruto says he is building a church in the presidential residence in Nairobi, for which he will pay for himself – and says he has nothing to apologize for.
“I am not going to ask anyone to apologize for the construction of the church. The devil can be angry and I can do what he wants,” President Ruto said on Friday.
The statement itself only angered the Kenyans who were already disappointed with their leadership style and what they consider to pollute the state and the church.
BBC asked the government to comment.
It is unclear who Ruto meant “the devil” in his comments in the state house, but he says that nothing will prevent the project go forward.
On Friday, one of the presenters of Kenya – Daily Nation – published architectural projects showing a large building with stained glass and capacity for 8,000 people.
The document questioned whether the draft with the secular constitution of Kenya was in line with.
There was also a criticism of the cost, according to $ 9 million (6.5 billion pounds), at a time when many Kenyans fight the rise in cost.
Ruto said he would pay for the church out of his own pocket, but it raises the question whether he has the right to create such a large structure on state property.
In an open letter, one MP said that Kenya was not a Christian state and belonged to people of all religions.
While about 85% of Kenyans are Christian, there is also a large Muslim population about 11%, as well as other minority denominations, including Hinduism and traditional African religions.
There is no mosque and a temple in the presidency.
“I did not start building this church when I entered the House of State. I found a church but one made of iron sheets. Does it look proper for a state house?” Ruto was summoned at a meeting held on Friday.
