Indian national cricket team skipper Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been in the news for the past few weeks. The Indian cricket stalwarts failed miserably in the Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia, after which their place has been questioned.
After their failure with the bat, there have been various opinions that have claimed that both Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli need to play domestic cricket to get back to form. Even head coach Gautam Gambhir mentioned that all the players need to play domestic cricket to keep up the pace.
Of late, the BCCI has given a lot of importance to domestic cricket. Last year, when Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan did not agree to play the domestic season, they were removed from BCCI central contracts and were also omitted from the Indian national cricket team in the three formats of the game.
There have been rumors that the same fate might follow for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. However, as per Hindustan Times reports, it is learned that the two Indian cricket greats are unlikely to face the same fate if they do not play in the Ranji Trophy.
A BCCI official mentioned that the governing body feels that if Virat Kohli wants to play, he has to bat like himself and follow the rules. Speaking to Hindustan Times, he explained:
“With Kohli, however, there is a strong view within the board that if he wants to play, he should bat with pomp like before, and for that, it may be necessary to go back to the basics.”
The official mentioned that it was not a “dictation” to prioritize domestic cricket in the wake of India’s poor batting show in the Australia tour. But he stressed that if someone does not play in the Ranji Trophy without valid fitness reasons, they may have to pay the price. He added:
“If players do not play in the Ranji Trophy without valid medical or fitness reasons, it would have an influence on their future selection in India.”
He added that spending at the crease to regain confidence is a must for all players. He emphasized that no matter how experienced a player is, it is essential for everyone. He explained:
“There’s no substitute for spending time in the crease to build confidence. It’s for the player, no matter how experienced, to realize that.”
Both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma suffered a massive bombshell after their failures in the Test series against Australia. While the middle-order batsman amassed around 190 runs, the captain managed only 31 runs at an average of around 6.
