Can a partial monthly truce between Russia and Ukraine become a key to unlocking lasting peace between the two sides?
President Emmanuel Macron from France so believes, and he sailed on the idea during the Sunday summit of European leaders in London.
In an interview with Le Figaro, he offered a four -week truce “In the air, at sea and energy infrastructure”. This does not cover the earth’s fights along the front line in the east.
“In case of ceasefire, it would be very difficult to check (truce) along the front,” Macron said in the newspaper.
In a separate interview, French Foreign Minister Jean-Nael Baro said: “Such a truce in the air, maritime and energy infrastructure would allow us to determine whether Russian President Vladimir Putin can act in good faith if he is overcoming.
So far, this is a more idea than a fully developed plan, and the hard details are small. But the essence of the hypothesis seems to share the process of ending the fighting.
The initial short -term truce is something less constant than the official ceasefire – it would give the moment to check Russia’s readiness to negotiate the world. It will also potentially give early political victory for President Trump.
This does not provide any territory. And this can create a political space to allow serious negotiations to start a lasting peace.
According to the French proposal, the European “confidence” will be located in Ukraine to restrain the future Russian aggression only after any strong ceasefire has been agreed.
British Ambassador to Washington, Lord Mandelson, turned out to be an interview with ABC News on Sunday: “Ukraine must first commit to ceasefire and challenge the Russians.”
But on Monday, government officials and ministers of the UK were steep about the idea of a French truce and emphasized that this was not yet an agreed proposal. The Armed Forces Minister Luke Palord said today in the BBC program: “A number of options are being discussed at the moment. None of them have been agreed at this stage.”
The Prime Minister’s press -secretary said: “There are clearly a number of options on the table. I just don’t come into a comment.”
According to the Italian news agency Ansa news agencies, Deputy Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani.
“I believe that everything should be done together, Europe and the US, sitting at the table with Ukraine and Russia to reach a fair and especially long peace,” Tajan said. “So still see what to do as to do it.”
With this idea clearly complexity. How could the size of an anonymous drone attack on the Ukrainian power plant could be in size? Why would Ukraine like to give the Russian forces a free moon for overloaded and back?
But with all this, Western diplomats stated that the idea of President Macron is not quite a “blue thinking” – a man known for floating ideas at international summits.
They said it could be part of the European ceasefire plans that Americans work on.
Obviously, some fresh thinking may be needed to try to unlock the modern impasse from the US and Ukraine, which are still at odds, and Europeans are struggling to find ways to repair the diplomatic violation.
Of course, everything depends on what Ukraine and Russia think. On Sunday night, the Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky was asked if he knew about the French truce plan and said simply: “I know everything.”
There is no evidence that the Russians will be ready to agree to a partial truce. As Zelensky said: “Anyone who wants to negotiate did not intentionally hit people with ballistic missiles.”
