While at a party celebrating their elite status in the news, the character of Christina Applegate (Veronica Corningstone) is presented. After an unsuccessful erection attempt by Burgundy, station leader Ed Harken (played by Fred Willard) announces that he was forced to hire Corningstone.

Eventually, Will Ferrell convinces Applegate to go out with him, and the date ends in the pair awkwardly grabbing up. Veronica asks Burgundy to keep the relationship quiet so as not to cause issues at work, but Burgundy announces their union on the news quickly for everyone to see. His lack of discretion makes an enemy out of Corningstone, and their competition grows more toxic as the film progresses.

When Burgundy is late to work due to a motorcyclist dispute, Corningstone is asked to fill for it on the air. After receiving a higher score than Burgundy, Corningstone is promoted to fellow of Wales. Burgundy and her friends Macho meet this decision with obvious contempt, firing the fire between the already stressed couple and leading to their breakdown.

The battle between the two continues, leading to some pretty spectacular pranks. After discovering that Burgundy will read anything he sees on the teleprompter, Corningstone launches the ultimate sabotage of his career by rewriting the reports and inserting some trophy choice language along the way.

Will Ferrell’s character usually ends his reports with his famous tag line, “You stay in Classy, San Diego,” but Veronica changes the line to “go f – k yourself, San Diego”. In real form, Burgundy reads the inadequate as it is written. His ungodly adieu leads to an angry crowd lining outside the studio, and Harken is forced to terminate Burgundy.

Two other pretty funny quotes are distributed during various conversations that Burgundy has with his beloved dog, Baxter. After arriving home to a bit of a mess, Burgundy excuses, “What? You popped in the fridge? And you ate the whole wheel of cheese? How would you do it? Heck, I’m not even crazy; that’s amazing.”

When Baxter barks on him in response to Will Ferrell pouring his concerns, Burgundy is quoted saying, “You know how to cut to the core of me, Baxter. You are so wise. You are like a little Buddha, covered with hair.”
