Lacking its 80th anniversary, Rodrigo Duterte, a man who once vowed to clear his country through bloody anti-narcotics and crime was overcome and in custody.
The former president was met by the Philippine police when he arrived in Manila during a Hong Kong flight, where he rallied support for his candidates for the upcoming average choice among the major Philippine diaspora.
It turned out that in the hands of the Philippine government, a warrant was expelled from his arrest from the International Criminal Court (ICC), already in the hands of the Philippine Government, which quickly moved to execute it.
The appearance of Mr. Duterte, who walked with a stick, was transferred to the Air Force base on the perimeter of the airport. The marteric aircraft was quickly ready to deliver it to the ICC in The Hague.
How did it happen? How was the person so powerful and popular, often called “Trump Asia”, was given so low?
In vain, his lawyers and family members protested that the arrest had no legal basis, and complained that the sanitary health of the Duterte was neglecting.
Being in the post, Mr. Duterter created an alliance with the Markos family – children overthrown by dictator Ferdinand Markas, who has long been working on a political return. In the 2022 elections, Mr. Duterte could not work again, but his daughter Sarah, the mayor of Davao, was also a popular and strong contender to replace it.
However, the son of Ferdinand Marcos Bongbon, who has been engaged in politics all his life, was also well -financed.
Both families concluded a deal. They will work together to enter the BongBong in the President and Sarah into the vice presidency, assuming that the next election in 2028 will come and it will have a formidable Marcos behind it.
It worked. Both won their positions with a great break. Mr. Duterte hoped that his alliance would protect him from any strike over his contradictory presidency as soon as he came out of power.
The most serious threat that hung over him was the ICC investigation into his guilty for thousands of extrajudicial murders, during the anti -Narcotics he ordered after he became president in 2016, but also during his stay as the Southern city of Davao since 2011.
Mr. Duterte abandoned the Philippines from the JSC jurisdiction in 2019, but his prosecutor’s office claimed that they still had a mandate for alleged crimes against humanity committed before, and launched an official investigation in 2021. However, President Marcos initially stated that his government would not cooperate with the ICC.
This position has changed only after the dramatic break of the Alliance Markas. The strains in their relations were obvious from the earliest days of the administration, when the request of the Duterte was controlled by the powerful Ministry of Defense, and it was given by the Ministry of Education.
President Marcos also abandoned the mercury policy of his predecessor, excluding fences from the United States, speaking to China in challenged seas and stopping the threat of blood against drug dealers.
In the end, these were two ambitious, hungry clans that sought to dominate the Philippine politics, and they lacked strength. Last year, the relationship reached Nadir when Sarah Duterte announced that she had hired the killer to kill President Marcos if something happened to her.
At the end of last year, the Lower Congress, controlled by Marcos, filed a motion for impeachment by Ms. Duterte. This lawsuit should take place in the Senate at the end of this year.
If it is recorded, according to the Constitution, it is forbidden to hold a high political position, kill its long -standing presidential ambitions and further weaken the political power of Dutter.
President Marcos seems to have moved deftly to neutralize his main political competitor. But his strategy is not without risk. Dutertes remains popular in most of the country and may be able to mobilize protests against the persecution of the former president.
Sarah Duterter made a statement that accused the government of passing his father “foreign states” and violated Philippine sovereignty.
The early test of support used by both clans will be in May.
In his comments to journalists after the plane transporting its predecessor flew out of Manila, President Markas insisted that he fulfilled the country’s commitments on Interpols that delivered the ICC. But he was called to the fact that he was performing the ICC warrant, given that many Philippines questioned that the transfer of the ICC in a country that has already left its jurisdiction.
It also does not risk the MCC. These days, the court is a fighting institution, and the Trump administration threatens to arrest its top officials when they travel to the US and several countries who want to extradite those he has accused. Thus, receiving the former President Duterte in The Hague may look like a vital loud success.
But China has warned – it does not admit that it does not sign the ICC and now registrations with the Philippines – not to politicize the cases of the MCC. It was a subtle bubble link to the fact that this case, which should be associated with the accounting for serious international crimes, eventually plays a decisive role in home hostility in the Philippines between the two competitors of political forces.
