After President Donald Trump said there was never such a great international interest in Greenland and its elections, he wants to make a semi -automatic US territory.
About 44,000 Greenlanders from the population of 57,000 can vote for elected 31 deputies as well as the country’s government.
Six parties are on the newsletter. Five prefer Greenland’s independence from Denmark, different only on how quickly it should happen.
The current Prime Minister, mute Bogen, made it clear that Greenland is not sold and deserves to “treat”.
It is projected that his Inuit Atakatiat (IA) party will come up from 31% of the vote and then Social Democrat Simiut.
There are 72 polling stations scattered on the Greenland coast, and the vote continues until 20:00 (22:00 GMT), and the results are expected at the beginning of Wednesday.
Greenland’s most size and the distance of many settlements and small cities means that it can be a problem to provide ballots.
No town is connected by the road or the railway, and the island is subjected to extraordinary arctic weather.
Back in 2018, 55 residents of Savisivik in northern Greenland never received ballots from the bad weather, according to Danish reports. Thus, the Air Gornland base manager on his 4×4 and a local dog sledding has merged efforts to deliver ballots on time.
Aircraft, helicopters, ships, boats, cars, snowmobiles and dogs are regularly used to make the ballots reach all corners of the country before the elections.
When the polls are closed, the stations send their results by five Greenland municipality to the counting.
In the last parliamentary elections in Greenland in 2021, the turnout was 65.9%.
The election campaign discussed the state of health, social issues, fisheries and economics.
But this issue of Greenland’s independence from Denmark is dominated by the discussion.
Although now semi-automatic, Greenland was controlled by Denmark-Amal 3000 km (1860 miles)-300 years.
NALERAQ, the current opposition party, has gained strength and promises to vote for independence for three -time years.
Other parties are more careful and avoid giving accurate terms.
Taking off in connection with Denmark it would be a big blow to the Greenland economy, which depends on the fish sector. Danish subsidies currently make more than $ 565 million (£ 435) – a fifth of total economic products or GDP.
“At the moment (Greenland) is not ready for independence,” said Bank Director Greenland Martin Quysgaard ahead of the election. “It will take many years to become fully ready for it when you talk about becoming financially self -sufficient … Fishing is not enough.”
Past colonial violations meant that Denmark did not go out of the independence discussion.
Mette Prime Minister Frederixen has repeatedly stated that this is to make Greenland decide their future.
The US president first sailed the idea of buying Greenland in 2019 by the end of the first term.
However, since the beginning of this year, he has expressed interest in acquiring the Arctic Island with an increasing frequency, to the signaling of many in Greenland, and Denmark.
In January, Trump’s son, Donald Jr., visited Greenland on the fact that he was a “personal trip”, but also caused true nervousness, that Trump’s interest was not just fleeting.
Greenland lies on the shortest way from North America to Europe, making it strategically important to the US.
It also has a large American space object and valuable mineral reserves that are still difficult to use.
Last week, Trump said Congress: “We are going to get (Greenland) – one way or another.”
Thus, the president’s shadow emerged in this election.
Five of the six party leaders said on a debate on the final candidates that they did not believe that the US president could be trusted.
If Greenland will eventually choose independence from Denmark, it will have freedom to continue closer ties and become much more exposed to the US interest.
Thus, it is not surprising that in January Donald Trump returned a poll in 2019, which showed that 68% of the Greenlanders supported independence from Denmark.
Trump’s comments to Greenland caused a barely hidden panic in Copenhagen earlier this year.
Mette Frederixen spent most of January, holding talks with his government, as well as with other Scandinavian and European leaders. She also did not talk to Trump on the phone at the same time.
Crazy diplomacy has cooled in recent weeks when Ukraine and other global problems have been central to Washington.
But when Greenland voted on Tuesday, Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen addressed President Trump, saying that “the main powers are of different interest in Greenland than before.”
Of course, it was important, he added diplomatically, “that Greenland is choosing some unwavering politicians to lead the country through it.”
