Why Genta took on the street in Nepal

Prime Minister Nepal K.P. Sharma Oli resigned as a result of public outrage due to the killing of 22 people in police fighting with anti-corruption protesters.

His office said he refused to pave the way to the constitutional solution of large -scale protests under the leadership of youth over wide accusations of corruption and caused by a ban on social media that was abolished.

Protests became fierce when thousands identified themselves as a gene z on posters and banners – took to Kathmanda Street on Monday.

Almost 200 people are believed to be injured in clashes with police, which used tear gas, water cannons and live bullets when the rally participants scale the walls of the parliament and other official buildings.

The protests continued on Tuesday, and the demonstrators set fire to the parliament building, the Nepali Congress and the House of former Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba. The houses of a number of other politicians were also vandalized.

Social media is a majority of Nepal life. Indeed, the country has one of the highest rates of South Asia per capita.

The demonstrations were summoned by the government’s decision last week to ban 26 social media platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, for implementation to register with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology.

Critics have accused the government of seeking to stifle an anti -corruption campaign with a ban that was abolished on Monday night.

While the ban was a catalyst for current unrest, the rally participants also send a more deeply implemented dissatisfaction with the country’s authorities.

The following demonstrations became tough in Kathmandu and some other cities of Nepal, on Monday, 19 protests are protesting with police.

Nepal’s Minister of Communications Pritvi Subba told the BBC later on the day that the police had to use the force – which included water guns, batons and shooting from the rubber bullets.

Some participants of the rally managed to violate the perimeter of the parliament building, which forced the police to impose a curfew around key state buildings and strengthen security.

On Tuesday, the participants of the rally also set fire to the parliament in the capital of Kathmandu, sending thick black smoke blowing into the sky. Government buildings and political leaders were attacked across the country.

At least three people were killed on Tuesday, leading to the total number of dead at least 22 since the excitement began.

Many of the victims were taken to local hospitals where crowds were gathering. Nepalese BBC talked to doctors who said they had treated firearms and rubber injuries.

Police said several officers were also injured and allegedly increasing the victims.

On Tuesday evening, Nepal Army Chief General Ashok Raj Sigdel made a statement who accused the demonstrators of using the current crisis, damaging, robbery and arson for state and private property.

When the unrest continues, the statement states: “All security institutions, including the Nepalese army, seek to take control of the situation.”

At the same time, General General Ashok Raj Sigdel invited the participants of the action to participate in the dialogue to find a solution to the worst unrest for decades.

However, it remains unclear who rules the country at this point.

The army statement does not specify what actions it may take, or if it used the power to control protesters. But they are already on the streets to control those who are trying to take advantage of the unfavorable situation in the country and participate in robbery, arson and vandalism. ”

It is also unclear who will represent the participants of the action if they participate in dialogue with the army. These protests were not led by a group or a person, and actually began as a response to the social media platforms.

The only political figure that has openly supported the protest is the mayor of the capital’s city of Katmond Bale Shav. He addresses the returns in his social media account.

The Subhana Budthathaki, the creator of the content, repeated the disappointment: “Gen z will not stop now. This protest is not only social media – this is about silence our voices, and we will not allow it.”

The decisive feature of the protest was the widespread use of two slogans – #nepo Baby and #nepo Kids.

These two terms have gained popularity in social media over the past few weeks after a number of videos showing a lush lifestyle and their families have become viral in Nepal.

The participants of the action claim that these people enjoy success and luxury without merit, living public money, while ordinary Nepaleks are fighting.

Viral videos on ticking and instagram contrasted a lush lifestyle of political families – involving design clothing, foreign travel and luxury cars – with the harsh realities faced by youth, including unemployment and forced migration.

Slogins have become symbolic for deeper disappointment with inequality, as the participants of the action compare the life of the elite with life citizens.

While the Prime Minister has left the post, it is unclear who replaced it – or what will happen next, and no one seems to be answered.

Some leaders, including ministers, have been reportedly found asylum with security forces.

The participants of the rally are still not largely amenable to an uncertain curfew on Chatmond and beyond.

The participants of the action require accountability and reforms in management. However, if the government is unable to attract comprehensively, analysts warn that the unrest can grow further, especially when students and civil society groups join.
