Former Fast Bolver of England David ‘Syd’ Lawrence, died on Saturday at the age of 61 after being diagnosed with the Motor Neuron’s disease (MND), a condition that he had fought in recent times. India and England were wearing black arms on the third day of the test game in Leeds as a mark of respect.
Lawrence debuted in 1988 as the first black man born in Britain to represent England in the test cricket. However, his international career ended in 1992, when he suffered a devastating knee injury during a test game in Wellington. He was named MBE to the King’s birthday honors in 2025.

David Lawrence represented England in five tests and a hatred
Lawrence represented England in five test games and a hatred between 1988 and 1992, collecting a total of 22 international doctors. It had a significant impact on the domestic cricket.
The former cricketter was one of the fastest bowls of his time. He took 515 doctors in 185 first class games and added 155 more to his account on the 115 game list.
“Lawrence brought dirty rhythm, aggression and fierce competitive spirit on the international stage. His best time came in 1991 when he took 5-106 against the western Indies in Oval,” said the ECB.

David Lawrence was diagnosed with a motor neuron disease (MND), a terminal neurological disease that gradually weakens the muscles affecting the nerves that control them in June 2024.
It remained closely related to sport, even joining Gloucestershire celebrations after a nine-year trophies drought finished winning the T20 explosion. Earlier this month, Lawrence published his autobiography, in La Veu de Syd, co -author of Cricket journalist Dean Wilson.
“It is very sad to announce the passage of Dave Lawrence Mbe after his brave battle with the disease of the motor neuron,” a statement from his family read.
“A proud man of Gloucestershire, Syd took on all the challenges with everything he could and his final contest with MND was no different. His desire to encourage and think of others until the end was typical of the man he was.”
