Former Australian Captain Ricky Ponting has shared his thoughts that Shubman Gill was appointed Indian test captain in front of England’s tour. The former cricket stated that Gill’s appointment as a test captain ahead of Jasprit Bumrah and Ris Hurbh Pant was the right and practical decision.
Many of Shubman Gill’s appointment was dropped from the two parties during the latest Indian Testing series in Australia. He has struggled to maintain a consistent form in the test cricket. The young batter promoted just over 35 through 32 tests, with his average falling below 30 in matches abroad.

Ricky Ponting supported Shubman Gill’s appointment as new Indian test captain over senior players such as Jasprit Bumrah and Ris Hurbh Pant. Ponting said Gill has the potential to succeed on paper. He added that recent Bumrah injury struggles make it a less reliable option for captaincy.

“Actually I think it is the right movement. I know there are a lot of other people here, punished here saying that they cannot understand why it was not Bumrah and why they have gone to Shubman, but I think it’s quite simple,” Ponting said at the ICC Review.
“Bumrah injuries retain it a bit in the last two years and you don’t want it with a captain. You can’t have a captain who comes in and lack the games here and there, so I think I think it’s the right decision,” he added.

Ricky Ponting said that Shubman Gill should be given enough time to prove. Ponting also said that the captain should do with the bat, adding that Gill is ready to succeed as a long -term test captain.
“Now that they have done so, this is what they have to stay -and give it a good crack over a long period of time,” said Ponting.
“Even just looking back about the way this current team has managed GT (Gujarat Titans) through this IPL, I think the leadership is very good with it,” he continued.
“And the important thing for me with leadership, as well as if you are a batter and you are captain, you have to mark currents. And Shubman does it to IPL and I think the calendar is correct and I think you will have a good captain who will do many test tests.”
The England-India Testing series will start on June 20
India will face England in the five -game series from June 20 to August 4. In particular, it will be the first task of India in the cycle of the World Test Championship 2025-27. The hosts won a 4-1 victory in early 2024 when these teams last met in India.
India will expect to get a victory in the Testing series in England. It is worth mentioning that they last won a victory in the series of tests in England in 2007. They took a 2-1 lead before England won the completed final test in 2022 to tie the series 2-2.
The series of England in the series has been renamed the tendulkar-Anderson trophy to pay tribute to the Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar and the Pace icon of England, James Anderson. Tendulkar retired in 2013 with 15,921 test tests, while Anderson finished his career by 2024 with 704 doctors.
