By kindness of filmupdates/xAnd it is. Smoking remains the leading cause of preventable death in the United States, with cancer -related tobacco use, heart disease and other health risks. Although public health campaigns have effectively reversed the epidemic – smoking rates fell by more than 85 per cent among young people between 1997 and 2022, according to the American Lung Association – recent years had seen the revival of the trend. In fact, in 2020, for the first time in two decades, cigarette sales increased, the Federal Trade Commission reported.
“The return of cigarette smoking among Gen Z is partly a rebellion against the sanitary, saturated technology culture, with a welfare obsession they have grown up in,” psychotherapist and authorJonathan Alpert have said Us. “Evaporation became mainstream and corporate: sleek, fertile and medical. Smoking, in contrast, feels raw, retro and rebellious.… In a constantly beaten world, cigarettes suggest something messy and real.”
(That Oviatt has used the word “curated” to describe his collection of pictures of people smoking – and Alpert is considering smoking – too much cured world -products – a contradiction that we do not have time to unpack.)
Alpert adds that the “romantic grittiness” of smoking is in line with the more aesthetic resurrection of the 90s, with young people in particular looking to cultural figures to shape their identity. He says: “He says:” When a persona includes addiction, the results are real. “
Oviatt sees it differently.
“There is quiet nihilism settling among younger generations,” he said. “Graduate, get a job, buy a house – that really doesn’t catch up anymore. So why still play according to the rules?”
For those who are not entertained or very proud of people of beautiful people lighting up, Oviatt simply says looking away: “You don’t have to be sigested.”
