Kathy Bates been honest about considering retirement before CBS ‘ Matloc He came over.
Despite having a rich career spanning five decades, Bates thought of stepping away from acting in recent years. Just until she read the script for Matty in the Sex-flipping Matloc Legal drama she is reconsidering.
“Let’s say it was a conscious choice. I watched a couple (episodes from Matlock’s original series) to see what I could get from it, but our show is just as different. I feel this part was written with me in mind,” shared Bates in June 2025’s issue of June 2025 Diversityactors on actors. “(Creator) Jennie Snyder Urman created him. And I’m lucky because I heard, originally, they wanted to do (my character) great-granddaughter Andy Griffith. So she would be 30-something.”
Bates loved have the opportunity to tell Real Stories of Aging.

“But Jennie went for a walk, and she came to her wanting to write something about older women and feel invisible,” he continued. “When I read the first script, I thought, this is just episodic, and I’m not interested in doing so. And then I finally got to the end, and this time. I said, ‘Oh, yes, I’m in. I’m in. I’m in.’ Because I really got one foot -out. ”

Bates made headlines when She appeared to be referring that Matloc was her last project, saying The New York Times“This is my last dance.” Bates said she had plans to move on from acting after shooting a film “soured” on the experience, but Matlock changed her mind.
“Everything I’ve prayed for, worked for, has clawed my way up, suddenly I can be asked to use it all,” he added at the time. “And it’s tired.”

“I think people are confused and think I’m going to retire,” he explained to PeopleWhen discussing MatlocSuccess. “What I meant was, how can he get better at all? I would love this to keep going.”

“I remember calling my agents and saying, ‘I think I may want to go in, if not retiring, semi-retirement. If I can’t afford to keep my house, I’ll sell it and maybe go to New York,’” he remembered. “Then this happened. I couldn’t believe it.”

“Right before he gave me a chance to make the show, I got breast cancer and (my show) Harry’s law has been canceled somewhat unpleasant, ”Bates told the host Jesse Tyler Ferguson. “When that summer happened, it was degrading.”
Bates remembered feeling “kind of humiliation” at the time, adding, “I felt I had left my cast down and I had never been through experience like that. And then Breast Cancer, which runs in my family, so I wasn’t surprised.”
The actress admitted she wasn’t sure if she would Order more roles Before Murphy came over.
“But it was more painful than I thought it would be going to be,” he noted. “And I really felt this was my career over.”

According to Bates, she had “one foot -out of the door” with acting.
“I just felt I had little roles in movies I loved not seeing,” she shared while taking part DiversityActors series on actors. “I started asking myself, ‘Is this what I want to continue to do? Do I want to sell the house and maybe move to France and call it a day?’ And then I got this script. It fits me as a glove.
