South Korea has voted to impeach its acting president, Han Dak-soo, two weeks after parliament voted to impeach its president, Yoon Suk-yeol.
There was uproar in the National Assembly after the speaker announced that only 151 votes out of 300 would be needed to pass the impeachment bill, as opposed to the 200 votes needed to impeach President Yun.
Lawmakers from the ruling PPP party Yoon and Khan gathered around the speaker’s chair in protest and boycotted the vote.
192 lawmakers voted to impeach Khan.
Prime Minister Khan took over after President Yun was impeached by parliament following his failed attempt to impose martial law on 3 December.
But opposition lawmakers accused Khan of refusing to appoint judges to Yun’s impeachment trial, effectively halting the process.
Khan has agreed to step down, meaning the country’s Finance Minister Choi Sang Mok will become acting president.
