Betsei Arakova, the wife of the actor who won Oscar Gene Hakman, died of respiratory diseases associated with a gantavirus, a rare disease transmitted by infected rodents, confirmed by officials.
Health experts warn that Gantavirus may cause symptoms similar to the flu after the baying of rodents, and in severe cases it can grow into pulmonary syndrome (HPS) lifestyles.
Medical investigators believe that Ms Arakova has signed a contract with HPS, which led to her death.
It is believed that she died a week before her husband, who was at the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Authorities have discovered the dead couple at their home in New Mexico last month.
Here’s what you need to know about Huntavirus.
Gantavirus refers to a strain of viruses that are carried by rodents, primarily transmitted to the person through the inhalation of air particles from the dried rodents.
Usually infections occur when the virus becomes in the air from the urine, litter and saliva of the rodent, according to the centers for control and prevention of diseases (CDC).
Although rare, it can also spread through rodents or scratches. In North America, deer mice are the most common carriers, my clinic reports.
The virus can cause two severe diseases. The first, the pulmonary syndrome of Gantavirus – the most common in the US – was a disease that led to Ms. Arakov’s death, officials say.
Symptoms often begin with fatigue, fever and muscle pain, and then headaches, dizziness, chills and abdominal problems. When respiratory symptoms develop, the mortality rate is approximately 38%, CDC reports.
The second disease, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, is more serious and primarily affects the kidneys.
The CDC reported 864 Huntavirus cases in the US from 1993 to 2022.
Most cases were found in rural Western states such as California, Washington, Arizona, New Mexico and Colorado.
The agency began observing Daves of Gantavirus in 1993 during the outbreak of severe respiratory diseases in the area of four angles of the United States, where arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah meet.
Maybe about 150,000 cases of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome every year, the National Institute of Health said. There are more than half in China.
There is no specific treatment for gantavirus infections.
CDC recommends maintaining help for the treatment of symptoms.
Patients with pronounced symptoms may be taken at the hospital in intensive care departments. Some may need to be intimidated in severe cases.
CDC recommends turning off the rodents in homes or jobs to reduce the virus.
The agency also recommends sealing the entry points in the basements or attics, which rodents can enter the homes.
Wearing protective equipment is also offered when cleaning the rodents to avoid the inhalation of contaminated air.
