Fragments of the Western Neil virus were discovered in the UK for the first time, the UK Health Agency (UKHSA) reported.
The scientific -research program of the UKHS and the Agency for Healthcare Animals and Plants (APA) revealed genetic material in mosquitoes collected in Britain in 2023.
West Nile virus is a vector disease that is commonly found in birds that usually circulate through mosquito birds. In rare cases, mosquitoes can transmit the virus to humans.
UKHSA’s press secretary said the risk to the general public is “very low” but will be tips for healthcare providers.
