Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson, a Democrat, ordered flags to be flown at full-staff on Monday for the president-elect Donald Trump inauguration.
“I hereby direct that the flags of the State of Washington and the United States be flown at all public facilities on Monday, January 20, 2025, in honor of Inauguration Day,” Ferguson said.
This is despite President Biden’s official order afterward the death of former President Jimmy Carter On December 29, flags will be flown at half-staff at all government and public buildings and venues across the country for 30 days of mourning, which just includes Inauguration Day.
It is tradition when a former president dies to declare 30 days of mourning and order flags to be flown at half-staff.

Biden said the US flag “shall be flown at half-mast at the White House and on all public buildings and grounds, on all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the federal government in the District of Columbia and throughout territories. The United States and its Territories and Possessions.”
Flags will be flown at half-staff in Washington state on Tuesday to continue mourning for Carter.
“Flags are to be flown at half-staff at sunrise on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, and must remain at half-staff until the end of the day or sunset on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, as part of honoring former President Jimmy Carter for 30 years. days after his death,” Ferguson said.

Ferguson joins California Governor Gavin Newsom and Colorado Gov. Jared Polis as Democrats who broke with tradition and ordered flags flown at Trump’s inauguration before mourning ends on Jan. 28.
Next come orders from Democratic governors several Republicans who ordered the flags to be flown Monday included Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott.
House Speaker Mike Johnson also ordered flags to be flown at full-staff at the U.S. Capitol on Inauguration Day.
Trump has criticized the possibility of flying flags at his inauguration since Carter’s death.

“Democrats are all ‘giddy’ about our beautiful American flag being ‘lowered’ at my inauguration,” Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. “They think it’s so great, and they’re very happy about it, because actually they don’t love our Motherland, they only think about themselves.”
“Look what they have done to our once GREAT America in the last four years – it’s a complete mess! In any case, due to the death of President Jimmy Carter, the flag may for the first time in history during the inauguration of a future president, stand at half-mast,” he continued. “No one wants to see that, and no American can be happy about that. Let’s see how it turns out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The flags were flown at half-staff when former President Nixon was sworn in for a second term in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff following the death of former President Truman.
