The first vice-president of South Sudan Riek Machar, the long-standing rival of President Salva Kieir, was placed under house arrest, his party says.
The armed convoy led by the highest security officials, including the Minister of Defense, entered the residence of Machara in the capital, Juba, and disarmed his guards on Wednesday, said in the opposition to release the people’s movement in Sudan (SPLM/IO).
“Technically, D -Rachar is under house arrest, but security officers initially tried to pick it up,” said Ret Muo Tan, Chairman of the Party Foreign Relations Committee.
The government has not yet comment.
The UN warns that South Sudan is on the verge of returning to the civil war after the escalation of the conflict between Mother and the president, which is being built for weeks.
In August 2018, two leaders agreed to end the five -year civil war in which almost 400,000 people were killed.
But over the past seven years, their relationship has become more intense against the background of ethnic tensions and sporadic violence.
SPLM/IO said Machar was detained with his wife Angelina Teni, who is also the country’s minister.
“A warrant of arrest under incomprehensible charges was brought to him,” Tan said in a statement, calling the action “a brazen violation of the Constitution and a lively peace agreement.”
“The arrest of the first vice president under the proper process undermines the rule of law and threatens the stability of the nation,” he added.
The UN mission in South Sudan warned that the latest nation in the world risked losing “tough income over the last seven years” when it returned to the “state of war”, after reporting on the detention of Murne.
“Tonight the country’s leaders are on the verge of recurrence,” mission said in a statement Wednesday.
Violations of the 2018 peace deal “will not only devastate South Sudan, but also influence the whole region,” he added.
British and US embassies reduced their diplomatic staff and urged their citizens to leave the country, and Norwegian and German embassies closed their activities in Juba.
The escalation tension arises against the backdrop of updated contractions between the forces, faithful by two competitors in the Northern city of Nasir in the rich state of the Upper Nile.
