The ex -Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), Vijay Mallya, revealed the real reason to buy the Bengaluru franchise. Prior to the IPL’s inaugural season, Mallya wanted to buy several IPL teams, but Lalit Modi denied his application and only had an IPL team.
In a recent podcast with Raj Shamani, Vijay Mallya also revealed that he was the best officer of three franchises, but he chose Bengaluru as his first choice franchise he wanted to own.

Mallya only intended to buy an IPL franchise only to promote his whiskey brand. Mallaya was impressed with the Lalit Modi pitch to introduce the new T20 League to the BCCI.
Mallya was sitting at the same meeting where Lalit Modi was launching his idea of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Mallya represented the Karnataka State Cricket Association and ended up being the best offering for three franchises, but he chose Bengaluru.
Lalit called Vijay Mallya To ask if he was interested in buying a franchise, as the BCCI approved the proposal for Modi, and the teams were auctioned.
When the IPL was conceived, Mallya thought that there could be no better platform for promoting her whiskey brand globally. Mallaya wanted two IPL teams to promote their two brands, called Kingfisher and Royal Challenge (a whiskey brand).
“… he (modi) was jumping around the hoops. BCCI was quite bureaucratic at the time. He called me one day and said” OK, we are ready to go, the teams will be auctioned. Are you going to buy? “And I thought of a country where cricket is a religion, what better platform can I promote my brand than through an IPL franchise.
Mallya wanted to buy two or more IPL franchises, but Modi denied and stated that he could only have an IPL team. Mallaya’s sole purpose behind the franchise property was only to promote his brand. He admitted that possessing an IPL team was highly driven by business.
Vijay Mallya participated in the tender wars for the IPL franchises. Mallya has just lost the Mumbai team on a small margin, and her second option was Bengaluru. After winning the offer for Bengaluru, Mallya already thought of the name of his franchise as Royal Challengers Bengaluru to promote his Royal Challenge, a whiskey brand.
“The tender time came and I was really excited to have an IPL team to promote my brands. I made an offer for three franchises, and lost Mumbai for a very small amount of money. Obviously I chose Bangalore. And it was natural that it was the Royal Challengers Bangalore. It was how RCB was born,” Mallya added.
