Following the disastrous performance of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) against the Mumbai Indians (MI) in his IPL 2025 game at the Wankhede Stadium, Pyush Chawla has raised concerns about the team’s approach and shooting selection, especially by Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh.
The Kolkata Knight Riders shake line collapsed terribly, as the champions defending themselves were launched by only 116 at the Wankhede Stadium, with half the sides that were enruous for only 45 runs, and 26 were the highest score against Mumbai Indians on Monday.
Chawla, who played for both KKR and me, believes that the defense champions have not respected the conditions and the complicated land was wrong. The ex -Indian filler was especially critical of Venkatesh Iyer, who was bought by a 23.75 mega junction at the IPL 2025 mega auction, but was dismissed by only three balls against me.

The selection of Rash de Iyer’s shots, which saw him advance to the goalkeeper of the Deepak Chahar ball, was only added to KKR’s discomfort. It also fell in just six runs at the IPL 2025 opening against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the Kolkata Eden Gardens.
Chawla mentioned that the conditions at Wankhede Stadium were not suitable for aggressive beating, especially with the swinging ball. He emphasized the need for players to play more carefully when the ball was new, waiting for it to soften before triggered.
Piyush Chawla said to Jiostar, “Sometimes you have to respect the conditions. It was not a typical shake surface, especially with the new ball. You have to play cautiously at first, since once the ball gets larger and softer, that’s when you can go for your shots. But here it did not happen.”
He said that players like Trent Boult, known for swinging the ball, were always going to represent a threat. Chawla also pointed out the pressure that Venkatesh Iyer should feel after its high price, which could affect his performances at the current IPL 2025.
He also explained: “We all know that Trent Boult can swing the ball outside, and it was clear that he had a plan for Sunil Narine, which worked perfectly. Venkatesh Iyer also fought, trying repeatedly luxury features. As I mentioned earlier, the pressure of Venkatesh Iyer is also a heavy price.”

In addition, Chawla believes that Rinku Singh played an unnecessary shot against the short ball, given the situation of KKR in the IPL 2025 clash with the Mumbai Indians. Rinku was fired by the debutant Pacler Ashwarni Kumar, after scoring only 17 runs.
Chawla was signed by saying, “Then the way Rinku came out: he has a good head on his shoulders, but this trait was not needed. There were still 8-10 left and the team needed stability. Even with an impact player and the battle depth to the new number, they could not play 20 points. That says that the whole story.”
