The fifth test between Australia and India at the Sydney Cricket Ground began on an emotional note. Australian opener Usman Khawaja wore a black armband as a moving tribute to Melissa, the late wife of former South African cricketer Ashwell Prince. Melissa recently passed away after a battle with cancer, and Khawaja’s gesture was a heartfelt way to honor her memory.
Khawaja’s gesture was a poignant reminder of the bonds cricket weaves across borders, with players supporting each other through personal tragedies.
The death of Melissa Prince left the cricket fraternity in mourning. Ashwell Prince, who represented south africa in 66 Tests and 52 ODIs, shared the heartbreaking news on Instagram, accompanied by an emotional tribute to his wife.
“It was extremely difficult to see you endure as much pain as you did in the last months of your life. But we choose to remember you the way we knew you. A gem, one of the few guys who touched people’s hearts in a special way wherever you go,” Prince wrote.
Her words reflected deep pain and love, capturing the profound impact Melissa had on those around her. “We miss you mom and can hardly believe you’re gone. But you left a mark on all our hearts that can never be erased. Happy New Year my love. Rest in peace up there, your children will always love you they’ll love it!”
After India was bowled out for just 185 in his first innings, Usman Khawaja stepped in to open Australia late on Day 1. But his time at the crease didn’t last long. Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah sent a sharp delivery that took the edge of Khawaja’s bat, sending him back to the pavilion after scoring just 2 runs off 9 balls.
While his batting performance was quiet, Khawaja’s tribute had a stronger impact. That black armband said more than runs or wickets ever could.
