Trump administration temporarily prohibits the import of cattle, horses and bison across the southern border from the rapid northern distribution of the new world Screw worm (NWS) in Mexico.
The Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture of the United States (USDA) Brooke Rolinz announced the suspension in the X report on Sunday.
“I announce the threat of a new world screw worm about the suspension of live cattle, horses and bison through the southern border entry parks at once,” she wrote. “The last time this devastating pest has broken into America, it took 30 years to restore our cattle industry. It cannot happen again.”
In a press release, USDA reported that the first NWS in Mexico was registered in Mexico in November 2024.

The problem is that if the NWS Fly larvae are formed into the flesh of living animals, they can cause serious and often death damage to the animal, USDA reports. NWS animal types can infect pets, animals, wildlife, birds and rarely.
According to USDA, NWS has recently been discovered in remote farms with a minimum cattle movement up to north about 700 miles from the US border.
The US and Mexico work together to eradicate NWS before the deadly parasitic fly passes to the southern border.

According to USDA, USDA, Animal Inspectorate Service (Aphis) and US Customs and Border Protection restrict the import of live products for animals that come from or transport through Mexico.
The suspension will continue monthly or reached a “significant curb window”,-the USDA said.
Currently, animal husbandry, which contains entry to the US, will be processed normally, the USDA added, and will be checked by a veterinary medical staff of the port and processed to make sure that they do not tolerate the SZ.

“Secretary Berdeg and I closely cooperated on the NWS reaction; however, my duty to take all steps in my control to protect livestock in the US from this destructive pest,” Rolinz said about the work she did with her Mexican counterpart. “Protecting our animals and the safety of our Nation is a issue of national security. Once we see an increase in observation and eradication efforts, as well as the positive results of these actions, we still seek to open the border for animal trade. It is not about the policy or punishment of Mexico, but about the nutrition and safety of animals. “
The United States and Mexico take a tripartite approach to the elimination of the CFs, which includes field observations with education and propaganda, which provides prevention, treatment and early detection. The approach also includes control over animal movement to limit the spread of SZ and a steady sterile crackdown on the insect.

This is not the first time the need for NWS was needed. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said NWS was erected in the US in the 1960s and in Mexico in the 1970s.
However, the eradication of the deadly worm is worth billions of dollars and has occupied decades.
