US avoids government shutdown after Congress passes bill

The Democratic-controlled US Senate voted to pass a budget deal to avert what would be the first shutdown of the US federal government since 2019, just hours after the House of Representatives approved the same legislation.

The budget deal was passed shortly after midnight.

That doesn’t include President-elect Donald Trump’s demand that lawmakers increase the amount of money the federal government can borrow, showing the limits of his ability to control lawmakers from his own party.

The bill now goes to President Joe Biden for his signature. A statement from Biden’s press secretary, released earlier Friday night, said he approved the deal.

Earlier this week, lawmakers successfully negotiated a deal to fund government agencies, but it collapsed after Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk called on Republicans to scrap it.

The bill approved by Congress is the third to be voted on by lawmakers this week after members of Congress rejected two previous bills.
