European leaders have warned that the Ukrainian borders were redirected two days before the US summit in Ukraine is due.
In their statement, European leaders stated that “residents of Ukraine should have freedom to decide their future.”
It added the principles of “territorial integrity”, which should be respected, and “international borders should not change by force”.
The application was signed by 26 of the 27 leaders. Missing the signatories, was Hungary leader Victor Orban, who maintained friendly relations with Russia and repeatedly tried to block the EU support to Ukraine.
The statement emphasized the nervousness that Europeans felt about Moscow’s actions in Ukraine, which in many countries – especially those bordering on Russia, or those in which the memory of the Soviet occupation is still delayed – it could be a direct threat in the near future.
In recent years, Sweden and Finland have joined NATO, the Baltic countries have resumed conscription, and Poland has canceled billions to build a barrier along with Russia.
European countries have a long history of borders that are transformed by bloody wars and extremely concerned about the US prospects that allow it to happen in Ukraine. Legal recognition of Russian sovereignty over territories conquered by force is unacceptable for the EU.
However, the opinion is that some Ukrainian regions under Russian control may not return to Kiev.
US President Donald Trump has insisted that any peaceful deal provides for a “some replacement of territories” and can see Russia accepting the entire Donbass region in eastern Ukraine and keeping Crimea. In return, he would have abandoned the regions of Kherson and the blows he partially occupied.
Last week, recognizing that some Ukrainian territory could be actually controlled by Russia, NATO chief Mark Rute emphasized that this should not be officially recognized.
In their statement, European leaders stated that “the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine is more important for European and international security” and emphasized the need for “just and lasting peace.”
They also stated that Ukraine should be able to “effectively defend itself” and are obliged to continue to provide Kiev military support, which “exercised its right to self -defense”.
“The European Union emphasizes Ukraine’s right to choose its destiny and will continue to support Ukraine on the way to EU membership,” the statement reads.

In a social media report, his leader Victor Orban said he refused to support the statement when he tried to set the conditions for a meeting to which the EU was invited, and warned leaders not to start “providing instructions from the bench.”
