On Wednesday, Russia and Ukraine will hold a new round of peace talks in Istanbul, said President of Ukrainian Volodimir Zelensky.
“Today I discussed (Head of the Ukrainian Security Council) Rustem Mervo preparations for the exchange of prisoners and another meeting in Turkey from the Russian side,” Zelensky said in his daily address on Monday. “Measurer said the meeting is scheduled for Wednesday.”
Zelensky proposed fresh talks over the weekend, a few days after US President Donald Trump threatened Russia with “serious” sanctions if there was no ceasefire between Moscow and Kiev for 50 days.
Washington also promised a new weapon for the Ukrainian military after Russia strengthened the attacks.
Moscow has not yet commented on peace talks. The Russian RIA news agency, quoting the source, said the negotiations would take place within two days, Thursday and Friday.
A spokesman for the Turkish government’s government said the talks would be held in Istanbul on Wednesday, the same place where previous negotiations in May and June were unable to stop the fire, Agence France’s agency reports.
Negotiations this week will be another attempt to put an end to the war that has been going on for more than three years, and will come after Trump expressed his disappointment with Vladimir Putin. The US president said the BBC that he was “disappointed” but “not made” with the Russian leader.
Istanbul negotiations can focus on further exchanges of prisoners and a possible meeting between Zelensky and Putin, AFP told a senior Ukrainian official.
Moscow, however, soon diminished the likelihood of any specific result.
Commenting on the prospects of the breakthrough, Kremlin’s press -secretary Dmitry Pesko told reporters on Monday that both sides were “diametrically against” and “a lot of diplomatic work ahead”.
In recent weeks, Russia has strengthened its drones and missile attacks on Ukrainian cities, causing record victims of civilians. He launched a full -scale invasion of a neighbor in 2022.
