UK agrees with an agreement after Brexit over Gibraltar

The UK has been agreed with an agreement with the European Union on the status of Gibraltar after Brexit.

Negotiations on the rules governing the border of Spain and Gibraltar have been going on since Britain left the EU in 2020.

The UK said the agreement would avoid the need to check the people and goods that cross the Gibraltar-Spanish border.

Passport checks will be carried out for travelers arriving at Gibraltar Airport.

This is similar to a system that operates for Eurostar passengers at the London Station, Pancras, where travelers pass through British and French passport control before landing international trains.

British Foreign Minister David Lami said the transaction defended British sovereignty and supported Gibraltar’s economy.

He said that the “breakthrough” made a practical decision, adding: “This government inherited the situation from the last government, which put the economy of Gibraltar and the lifestyle under threat.”

Gibraltar’s Chief Minister Fabian Picard also welcomed the agreement, saying: “I worked in gloves with the UK government throughout this negotiation, to ensure the Gibraltar transaction and needs – one that will protect future generations of British Gibraltari and in no way affect our British sovereignty.”

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albarez and EU Trade Head Moros Sefkovich perceived this transaction as “historical”, and Sefkovich stated that he “strengthens the new chapter” in the EU-UC’s relationship.

The UK government said all parties pledged to finalize the text of the UK-ES Treaty on Gibraltar.

Gibraltar, which is a British foreign territory, is 2.6 square miles south of Spain.

Since 1713, the UK has been sovereignty over Gibraltar, although it disputes Spain, which claims the territory as its own.

The status of the territory and its border with Spain have been a key step and remained unresolved since Brexit.

15,000 people estimate that every day cross the border with Gibraltar-Spain for work and rest.

Currently, Gibraltar residents can cross using habitats without requiring passports. Spanish citizens can cross with the help of a state certificate.

The breakthrough came after Lami met Picard and his office in Gibraltar earlier before the couple headed to Brussels to discuss with EU ministers and Spanish.
