Former WBO middleweight champion Tim Tszyu was able to face Joey Spencer in April in Australia. This would be a confidence booster for the 29-year-old Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOS), who has lost his last two fights, on the way, on the way 0-2 in 2024.
Spencer would be a comeback fight for Tszyu to prepare him for a possible matchup against Keith Thurman. That is if Thurman is victorious in his March 12 bout against Brock Jarvis in Sydney. Tszyu was supposed to fight former WBC and WBA heavyweight champion Thurman last year on March 30, but pulled out of the bout with a bicep injury.
Before last year’s disasters, Tszyu would be considered an overwhelming favorite against Spencer (19-1, 11 KOS), but not anymore. It should be seen as a 50-50 fight because Tszyu has shown that he is incapable of making simple adjustments during the bout.
And Rafael reports Make Tszyu vs Spencer possible in the first quarter of 2025.
This is imperative for Tszyu because if he can’t beat 24-year-old Joey Spencer, he needs to seriously consider retirement because this is not a top level 154-pounder. He was destroyed in seven rounds by Jesus Ramos on March 25, 2023.
Since then, Spencer has beaten three no-name fighters to build himself up a bit. He has yet to prove that he operates at a world-class capacity, but he appears to be good enough to be selected as Tszyu’s fight in April.
The Murtazaliev disaster
Tszyu was obliterated in three rounds by IBF Junior Middleweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev on October 19 last year in an embarrassing four-round loss at Caribe Royale in Orlando, Florida.
Murtazaliev revealed after the fight that he was fighting with an injured right arm and was forced to use his left. This proved to be more than enough as he repeatedly dropped Tszyu with this punch until the referee finally wore him down in the third round.
Bakhram’s main weapon is his powerful right hand. You can only imagine what the struggle would have been like if he had that job cut out for him. Tszyu may not have made it in the first round.
Tszyu lost to the 6’5″ Sebastian Fundora by a 12-round split decision on March 30 of last year. Going into this fight, there was talk of Tszyu possibly fighting Terence Crawford for what would have been a big buck, but Fundora ruined it all.
