According to the former Prime Minister of the Italian Prime Minister and the dean of politics Enrico Lett, who called mutual levies “incomprehensible”.
Speaking in front of Silvia Amaro CNBC on the shore of Lake Kooma on the Ambrosetti Forum on Friday, he said Trump exploits the fragmentation to the EU, adding that the block was decisive.
He further warned that the US’s sweeping duties – which he called “a mad frontal attack on the world” – would hurt for economies and people in the US, as well as nations aimed at tariffs. He acknowledged that retaliation may be required to protect the European economy, but warned that “if the reaction to Trump would close Europe in the fort, this reaction would be worse.”
CNBC went to the White House for comments and waits for a response.
His comments generally repeat the sentiments of other European officials, after the block was impressed by 20% of mutual tariffs in the US EU chief Ursul von der Leyen, it sign that the block would prepare measures if negotiations with Washington failed. France and Germany called for a coordinated response, and German Economy Minister Robert Habek said Trump “buckle under pressure“
“And this pressure should now be deployed from Germany from Europe in union with other countries, and then we will see who is stronger in this struggle,” Habek said.
European economic growth can be under high pressure as a result of tariffs, which can push local manufacturers to reduce the price of exports on the market. Deutsche Bank calculated that the Euro-tariff GDP blow will be about 0.4-0.8 percentage points, which is greater than in the previous range of 0.3-0.4PP in the bank’s forecast 2025-2026 GDP.
The investment bank stated that it was “widely equivalent to economic stagnation by mid -2015”, which allows “euro growth forecast by 1.0% to remain general thanks to the initial benefits of increasing the defense/infrastructure expenses”, which began in Europe.
