President Trump on Thursday signed an executive order declassifying files on the assassinations of former President John F. Kennedy and civil rights activist Martin Luther King Jr.
Trump has promised to declassify previously classified documents during his 2024 campaign.
“Everything will be revealed,” Trump told reporters as he signed the executive order in the Oval Office of the White House.
During his first administration, Trump promised release all files related to John F. Kennedy, but an undisclosed amount of material remains secret more than six decades after Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963, in Dallas, Texas.
After appeals by the CIA and the FBI, Trump blocked the release of hundreds of records. At the time, Trump said the potential harm to U.S. national security, law enforcement and foreign affairs was “of such seriousness that the public interest in immediate disclosure outweighs it.”
Trump’s promise also to release documents related to King and former US Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, raising questions about how the president-elect will accelerate the releases.
Under the Martin Luther King Jr. Records Collection Act, the remaining files related to King must not be released until 2027.
