US President Donald Trump says India has suggested cutting its tariffs “to nothing”, even when he called the current trading deadlock with the country “a completely unilateral disaster”.
US Tariffs 50% on goods from India – Which includes 25% of Delhi’s refusal to stop the purchase of oil in Russia – came into force last week.
India did not respond to Trump’s latest comment, but such a war of words over Russian oil caused Delhi-Vashington’s ties with Press for all the time low.
Trump’s comment coincides with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visits the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in Tianzin, where he met Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Washington says Delhi indirectly finances Russia’s war in Ukraine.
“India buys most of its oil and military products in Russia, very little in the US,” Trump wrote, adding that Delhi had to reduce the tariffs “years ago”.
Earlier, Delhi stated that oil supplies from Russia are vital to meet the energy needs of its huge population.
He also called the tariffs “unfair, unfounded and unfounded.”
Last week, the Minister of Trade in the country Piyush Goyal said India “would not bow down and will not appear weak” in his economic relations with other countries.
He also said that the country is ready for free trade agreement with all who wanted it.
On Monday, Trump wrote: “What few people understand is that we are doing very little business with India, but they do a large amount of business with us.
Until recently, the United States has been the largest trading partner of India and tariffs caused fears that exports and growth in the fifth largest economy in the world could suffer.
