US President Donald Trump has said he is ready to impose tougher sanctions on Russia, but only if NATO countries meet certain conditions that include stopping the purchase of Russian oil.
In a report on his social platform, he stated that he was “ready to make serious sanctions on Russia” when NATO “agreed and started to do the same.”
Trump has repeatedly threatened to tighten measures against Moscow, but still did not take any action when the Kremlin ignored its terms and threats.
He described the purchases of Russian oil as “shocking”, and also suggested that China had 50 to 100% tariffs for China, saying it will weaken its “strong control” over Russia.
In what he called the letter in Nato, Trump said, “I’m ready to” go “when you eat. Just tell me?”
He added that “buying Russian oil, some, was shocking! It significantly weakens your negotiation position and negotiation power over Russia.”
Trump also claimed that a stop for Russian energy procurement combined with heavy tariffs in China “was completely recalled after the war, there would be a” great help “in ending the conflict.
Europe’s hope for Russian energy has fallen dramatically since the beginning of a full -scale invasion of Moscow.
In 2022, the EU received about 45% of gas from Russia. It is expected that this year up to 13%, although Trump’s words suggest that he feels that the figure is not enough.
US President’s message occurred during heavily tensions between NATO allies and Russia after more than A dozen Russian drones entered the Polish air space Wednesday.
Warsaw said the invasion was intentional, but Moscow had reduced the incident and stated that it did not plan to “aim” in Poland.
Denmark, France and Germany have joined the new NATO mission to strengthen the Eastern flank alliance and will move military assets to the east.
Last week, the President of Ukrainian Volodimir Zelensky also demanded European countries to buy Russian oil and gas.
In an interview with ABC News, he said, “We must stop (buying) any energy from Russia, and by the way, anything, any transactions with Russia. We can’t have any deals if we want to stop them.”
Since 2022, European countries have spent about 210 billion euros (182 billion pounds) on Russian oil and gas, according to the analytical center of energy and clean air research, most of which financed the invasion of Ukraine.
Earlier, the EU, until 2028, sought to gradually stop the purchases. The US wants this to happen faster – in part buying materials.
Trump’s message was on NATO, not the EU, so countries such as Turkey, the main buyer of Russian oil and the country that maintained closer relations with Moscow that any other alliance member.
Ankara’s conviction can be cut off by Russian supplies.
Trump’s latest threat to tougher sanctions in Russia took place earlier in September after the Kremlin’s heavy bombing began from Ukraine.
Asked by the journalists whether he was ready to switch to the “second stage” of Moscow’s punishment, Trump replied: “Yes,” though he did not give any details.
Earlier, the United States posted tariffs by 50% on India – including 25% of transaction punishment with Russia, which are a key source of war in Ukraine.
