Trump is giving the campaign the assurances it needs

TikTok became available to some US users on Sunday after the president was elected Donald Trump said he would sign an executive order delaying the federal ban on the app on the Monday after the inauguration.

In a statement on Xthe company wrote that it will restore access to its US users.

“In coordination with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service,” TikTok wrote. “We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will not face fines, providing TikTok to more than 170 million Americans and allowing more than 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

The decision is a “strong stance for the First Amendment and against arbitrary censorship,” the company added. “We will work with President Trump on a long-term solution that will keep TikTok in the United States.”

This came after Trump wrote on his social media account Social truth he will “issue an order on Monday” to extend the time period before the ban is put into effect.

“I’m asking the company not to let TikTok stay in the dark!” Trump wrote on Sunday morning.

Although TikTok was shut down for US users late Saturday night and removed from the Apple and Google app stores, some were able to access the platform on Sunday through their mobile apps and desktop computers.

The law banning TikTok was set to take effect on Sunday because ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese owner, had yet to transfer the company to a non-Chinese entity. The Supreme Court had managed on Friday to support legislation that would ban the app and punish third-party ISPs such as an apple and Googlewhen they supported TikTok on their platforms after the ban went into effect.

Despite TikTok’s promise to resume service in the US following Trump’s announcement, the company’s future remains unclear under current law.

Trump previously told Truth Social that he would like the U.S have 50% ownership TikTok is in a joint venture to “keep it in good hands and let it stay strong.” However, ByteDance has not changed its stance that it has no plans to sell the company.
