ReutersTwo major problems come in two major problems in less than 24 hours in two large foreign policy arenas.
Israel’s air coating in Hamas’s offices in Doha and the Russian drone, which invaded the Polish air space, are two massive headaches for the White House.
And perhaps two major involvement in the president’s powers.
In the end, this is conflicts – Ukraine and Gaza – US President Donald Trump said he would be rapidly and strongly affected.
In each case, the leader he perceives as a natural when a problematic ally Russian President Vladimir Putin and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu-naughty, a massive gas newspaper in the White House peace circles.
Consider the terms. The Doha raid took place only two days after the Trump administration made the latest proposals to end the war in Gaza.
Trump told Hamas on social media that it was the last chance.
“I warned Hamas about the consequences,” he wrote in social truth on Sunday. “This is my last warning, there will be no other!”
In Doha’s senior management, Hamas gathered to consider their answer, but Israel did not wait for his feeling. The attack not only undermined the latest US proposals, possibly destroyed all the delicate Gaza diplomacy architecture, on which the Trump administration was heavily relying.
The discussion twists as and when the US learned about the Israeli raid and can do it more to stop it. The presence in Qatar one of the most important US airbacks in the world has made many conclusion that Israeli planes were not approaching in Washington.
But if there was no green light from Washington – and many believe it was – what does it speak of Mr. Trump’s ability to influence Benjamin Netanyahu’s actions?
Over the last two years, after the humiliation suffered by Hamas, on October 7, 2023, Israel flexes its military muscles in the Middle East, mainly with the silent or obvious approval of the United States.
Israel has established itself as an undisputed hegemon of the region, capable of attacking the countries -volia as far as Yemen and Iran.
But in both cases, the United States also participated and shared the goals – stopping Huti’s attacks on Israel and delivery to the Red Sea and thwarted Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
The attack on Qatar, the key regional ally of the United States is a completely different matter.
Donald Trump said he feels “very bad” about it. According to the events of the White House, the news about the Israeli raid came too late to offer Qatar any meaningful warning.
“In the unilateral level of bombing inside Qatar, a sovereign nation and a close US ally, which works very hard and courageously risks with us so that the broker does not promote the goals of Israel and America,” White House press secretary Caroline told reporters.
It will not be enough to stop the suspicion in the American complicity, but it sounded like real anger.
For his part, Mr. Netanyahu wanted to emphasize that it was a “completely independent” action.
In the Washington Post, David Ignatius wrote that the Israelis called the “Fire Summit”, despite us, and Israeli assurances that Hamas leaders would not be aimed at Qatar.
For such assurances, when they were given to be so sharp throwing away, it will inevitably be considered in the Persian Gulf as a sign of American weakness.
EpaThen Poland.
Less than a month ago, Trump welcomed Putin at the Alaska summit, throwing out the red carpet, warming the architect of the war in Ukraine and into the hot microphone a few days, saying France Emanuel Macron, which Putin “wants to make a deal for me … how it sounds.”
But for weeks, far from progress to transaction, they only brought escalation. More record Russian drones and missile attacks on Ukraine, and now, for the first time, a flagrant invasion of NATO’s air space.
This is not the first time that Russian shells landed in Poland, but the previous episodes were close to the border and seemingly by accident.
But the invasion early on Wednesday morning were only random. Polish officials reported 19 Russian drones, some fly deep in Poland.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk said the parliament that it was “the closest thing we were open conflicts after World War II”.
Despite Russian refusals, there is an almost universal consensus that it is Moscow’s intentional effort to check NATO’s determination.
And since the US remains the most powerful alliance member, it means Donald Trump’s determination.
The president’s obvious reluctance to respond – unlike his comments to the Doha’s attack – did not go unnoticed.
“A wonderful silence from the White House met the news that the NATO ally was engaged and beat Russian military assets for the first time,” the Kyiv Post wrote.
EpaThe message about the truth of the social after all – and inevitably – come.
“What about Russia that violates Poland’s air space with drones?” The president wrote, adding, somewhat ambiguous: “Here we are going!”
But his initial silence combined with him seemingly unwillingness to follow his own threats to impose new sanctions, to leave the Western allies of Ukraine where they were always: I wonder where the Donald Trump’s heart is.
This can change if European officials working with their American colleagues on a coordinated sanctions package, the first since Trump has returned to the White House.
But given the preliminary ambivalence of the president regarding NATO, the members of the Alliance want to assure that if the sovereignty of the ally threatens, Washington can be relied on the answer.
A recent NATO resolution agreement to acquire US military equipment for Ukraine, as well as the commitment of members to spend more on its own defense, has done a lot to improve relations in the alliance, and Trump has abandoned such hostile rhetoric to NATO, which characterized his first term.
For their part, NATO European members have usually admitted that they must do more to care for their own security. A good example is the Polish police space.
But the American may, military and political, is still the basis on which the alliance is built, and the questions are delayed about the readiness of this president to possess this.
Two days, two conflicts and two puzzles. For Trump, a leader who does not like and does not expect to be challenged, it was a test experience. Everyone is waiting to find out if it is suitable for this.
