Trump gets to India with an additional 25% tariff for the purchase of Russian oil

US President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Wednesday, reaching India with an additional 25% tariff for Russian oil purchase.

This will increase the total tariff for Indian imports in the US to 50%.

The new rate should be “effective for consumption of goods, or withdrawn from the consumption warehouse, at 12:01 am in the east day light after a day after the date of this order,” the executive order said.

Earlier, the US president warned that he would raise the levies, saying that India “does not care how many people in Ukraine are killing a Russian military machine.”

“The actions of the Russian Federation in Ukraine are a constant threat to the US national security and foreign policy, which requires stronger measures to resolve the national emergency,” the White House said.

“The import of India’s oil of the Russian Federation undermines the US efforts to counteract Russia’s harmful activity.”

Earlier, New Deli called Trump’s threat to raise tariffs for oil acquisition in Russia “unjustified and unreasonable.”

In a preliminary statement, the press secretary of the Indian Foreign Ministry Randhir Jacewal said the US called on India to import Russian gas at the beginning of the conflict “to strengthen the stability of world energy markets.”

He said that India “began to import from Russia as traditional deliveries were redirected to Europe after the conflict was launched.”
