President-elect Trump called special counsel Jack Smith a “disgrace” to himself and the country after Smith’s resignation from the Justice Department.
Smith’s resignation was announced in court on Saturday.
“The Special Counsel completed his work and submitted his final confidential report on January 7, 2025, and left the Department on January 10,” the statement reads in a footnote.
On Sunday, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to criticize Smith for his investigation of the future president.

“Crazy Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family and his country. After spending over $100,000,000 on a witch hunt against TRUMP, he left town with nothing !” Trump wrote.
In November 2022, Attorney General Merrick Garland appointed Smith to investigate Trump’s role in January 6, 2021, Riot in the Capitol and his mishandling of classified documents.
Smith previously served as U.S. Attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2017 during the first Trump administration.
The resignation came ahead of the release of Smith’s report into the case involving Trump’s role in the attack on the Capitol. A recent court filing indicated that Garland plans to release the report soon, possibly before Trump takes office next week.
“As I have made clear to every special prosecutor who has served since I took office, I am committed to making as much of the special prosecutor’s report public as possible in accordance with legal requirements and Department policy,” Garland wrote in a recent letter to Chief Justice Jim Jordan. , Ohio, and ranking member Jamie Raskin, Maryland.
On Friday, a federal appeals court judge ruled against release lock Smith’s report.
After Trump won the presidential election in November, Smith filed motions to dismiss the cases against the president-elect.
At the end of November, Smith asked a judge to drop the charges against Trump in the Capitol riot case. Prior to this request, Smith filed a petition for release all terms in the event that was expected after Trump’s election victory.

After the cases were dismissed, Trump said they “never should have been brought.”
“These cases, like all the other cases I’ve been forced to go through, are empty and illegal and should never have been brought,” Trump said in a post on Truth Social. “That this could happen was a political theft and a low point in our country’s history, and yet I persevered, against all odds, and I WON. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
