Trump and Meloni are talking to the US Chances trading deal with Europe

Donald Trump and Georgia Meloni talked about the chances of a trade transaction between the US and Europe when the Italian Prime Minister visited Washington.

“There will be a trading deal, 100%,” said Trump, “but it will be a fair deal,” and Meloni said that they were “confident” they could reach an agreement, later adding that its purpose was “to make the West again.”

Meloni is the first European leader to visit Washington since Trump imposed, then stopped, 20% of the tariffs on the import from the block.

The couple enjoys a good relationship, and the Italian leader hopes to position himself as a bridge between the EU and the US against the background of destroyed relations and the concern of the world’s world exposure.

The leader said at a press conference on Thursday that they discussed the cost of defense, immigration and tariffs.

The atmosphere in the oval office looked casual and benevolent – similar to the reception of UK Prime Minister Kire Starmer, who received during his visit to the White House in February.

However, Meloni’s assistants described the visit as a “commercial mission” after Trump’s decision to impose 10% basic tariff for virtually all foreign imports in the United States.

He strongly criticized the European Union, saying that “formed to curl the United States.” 20% of the “retaliation” tariffs for the EU was temporarily suspended until July.

Earlier, Meloni called the tariffs “absolutely wrong” and stated that the EU was “as much as the United States”.

While during the meeting, she did not win any sensitive victories at the tariffs, she convinced Trump to accept an invitation to visit Rome, which, she said, would be a meeting with other European leaders.

Given the rich relations between the EU and the US, Meloni will most likely eliminate it as a significant victory, especially when Trump agrees to meet with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen during the visit.

Meloni will return to Europe with stronger powers, as the so-called “Trump whisper”, what will be reinforced tomorrow if it meets with US Vice President JD Vance in Rome.

The Italian leader gently praised Trump and is agreed in terms of the US president.

In her statement, after the meeting, she criticized the “woken ideology” and advocated a “war against illegal migration”.

“The goal for me is to make the West great again and I think we can do it together,” she added.

She also took the opportunity to unleash the work of her own government. “I am proud to sit here by the Prime Minister of Italy, that today is a very good situation – a stable country, a reliable country,” Meloni said.

She noted that her government had reduced her inflation and improved her job before pointing to Trump and adding with a wide smile: “Excuse me when I promote my country, but you are a businessman and you understand me.” Trump smirked back.

Meloni was warming in the praise fixed by Trump – from the compliments about her work of the Prime Minister – to the scorching about her Italian sound “beautiful”.

The US president praised Meloni for his tough immigration position and said he would like more people to look like her. Meloni said the changes occur thanks to the example of Italy, citing yesterday’s EU announcement about safe countries.

Only occasionally did she show a shade of irritation when asked about the low protection of Italy.

Meloni said she expected Italy to announce NATO in June that her country would be able to fulfill the Alliance’s requirement so that each nation spent 2% of GDP for defense.

The defense costs were a key point for Trump, and the US leader has repeatedly demanded that NATO allies increase costs.

Italy is one of the eight countries that currently do not match 2%, they spend 1.49% on defense.

The leader of the Italian opposition, Carl Calenda, said that there were “two very positive results” from the visit: that Meloni “remained on the way to Ukraine and managed to convince Trump to meet with EU figures in Italy.”

The calenda said Meloni “acquired an authority as a bridge between the US and the EU”, but criticized its praise “Trump’s struggle on the awake culture”.
