The local fire brigade honored the memory of a nine-year-old boy who died in an attack on a German Christmas market.
Andre Gleissner died after his car plowed into a crowd of shoppers at a market in Magdeburg on Friday evening, according to the Schöppenstedt fire department.
In a statement, they said he was a member of the children’s fire brigade in Varla, about an hour’s drive from Magdeburg.
The attack also killed four women aged 45, 52, 67 and 75. There is power detention of the suspect in a detention center on charges of murder, attempted murder and grievous bodily harm.
“Our thoughts are with Andre’s family, who we also want to support during this difficult time,” the fire department said in a statement.
The youth fire brigade of Lower Saxony also paid tribute to the nine-year-old.
“Our condolences to his family, friends and all who were close to him,” the statement said.
“We support them in this difficult time and express our deepest sympathies,” the statement added.
More than 200 people were injured in Friday’s attack, some of them in critical condition.
The four women who were also killed have not yet been identified.
The car entered the crowded market in the emergency lane around 7:00 p.m. local time (6:00 p.m. GMT), police said.
Eyewitnesses describe how cars jumped out of the way, ran away or hid. Unverified footage on social media shows a car speeding down a footpath between stalls.
Police said the driver then returned to the road and was forced to stop in traffic, where he was arrested.
According to the city authorities, about 100 policemen, medics and firefighters arrived at the scene.
A 50-year-old man has been remanded in custody on suspicion of five murders, multiple attempted murders and grievous bodily harm, police said.
The suspect was identified in local media as Taleb al-Abdulmohsen, a Saudi-born psychiatrist who arrived in Germany in 2006.
The motive for the attack remains unclear, but authorities say they believe the driver was acting alone.
German authorities faced security concerns after being warned last year that the suspect might pose a threat.
Saudi Arabia’s foreign ministry said it had warned the German government about al-Abdulmohsen’s extremist views, but had received no response.
