Tottenham’s manager, Ange Postecoglou, once again hit himself against the claims between being a hero or a clown for the club in the final of the Europa League season that defines the season.
The Spurs have endured a domestic nightmare campaign, one that has seen them suffer 21 defeats in the Premier League, in which they cannot end more than the 14th.
But Tottenham will qualify for the Champions League if they passed the Manchester United in the Final of the Europe League in Bilbao.
It is not clear if Postecogllo remains the club beyond this season, but its legacy will probably be determined by the events of the San Moms.
But, asked about the fine line you see that the match against United is stepped on, postcoglou was emphatic in his answer.
Answering a journalist from the Night Norm who used the “Hero or a Clown” phrase in a piece ahead of the final, Postecoglou said: “This depends on your perspective, but I will tell you one thing, regardless of tomorrow, I am not a clown and I will never be.
“I was really disappointed that you used this terminology to describe a person who, for 26 years, without anyone, has worked for a position where he runs a club in a European final.
“Because you suggest that somehow we are not successful means I’m a clown, I’m not sure how to answer this question.”
Postecoglou has often received criticism that his style of play has left Tottenham open at the back, as they continued to play a high line, while key players injuries have had a clear impact on the fortune of Spurs in their second season.
“It’s difficult to contextualize the challenges of the last two years,” said Postecoglou. “From my perspective, I entered the club with some clear goals.
“I have tried as strong as I can keep in this process to make the club a position where they can challenge the trophies and at the same time to rejuvenate the workforce and change the style of play. It has been a just task with many challenges along the way.”
“With such a great game tomorrow, there is the opportunity to fulfill at least the main task I was given, which was to bring trophies to the club.”
The Spurs have broken the United three times this season through the EFL League and Cup, but Postecoglou does not believe that these encounters have any incident in this most important game of the season among the sides.
“It’s an end and these kinds of things are not important,” said Postecoglou.
“What I know is, even your shape comes in, even if you are terrible, no matter. What matters is how players face the occasion, how they face understanding the importance of the game, of the two clubs. You just don’t know how the players will react on such a great occasion.
“My role in this is to try to prepare players in the best possible way and also to prepare the players so that Manchester United is at their best. If you prepare like that and go out there and play the potential that you can give -a chance.
“I don’t think what you have done before any opposition is really important when it comes to big games. Maybe in the League it is a bit different, but in a great important end, everything is decided on the day.”
