These days, it’s hard to imagine any film starring Tom Cruise without also assuming that the Top gun the actor had a heavy hand in influencing its development and production. Although Tom Cruise prefers to retain creative control over the intellectual properties he associates himself with, he still cut his thespian teeth starring in the 1985 fantasy film directed by Ridley Scott, Legend. In fact, Tom Cruise regrets starring Legend for this very reason because he had no control over the narrative.
And who are we to blame Tom Cruise for having hard feelings about his role in a film like Legendwhich was not a critical or commercial success when it was first released, but instead did quite poorly until Ridley Scott released his Director’s cut – with 25 minutes of extra footage – in 2002. Since then audience reviews retrospectively allowed Legend to achieve cult-classic status with an audience rating of 73 per cent onwards Rotten tomatoesbut back in 1985 the film was heavily criticized for not using its elaborate and expensive set pieces to their full potential.
Although we can all look back in wonder at such a great piece of Tom Cruise cinema Legendit’s easy to understand where Cruise is coming from. Looking back on Cruise’s storied 40-year acting career, one of the common lines that has been established is that he doesn’t sign on to a project until he’s 100 percent behind the character he’s about to portray , and he works tirelessly to ensure that he gives. the role of his undying commitment.
Tom Cruise, known for his big budget adventures, has defied the laws of physics by performing his own risky stunts. What’s more, when asked about the legendary stunt he climbed the Burj Khalifa skyscraper in Mission: Impossible – Ghost ProtocolCruise proudly announced that he had fired the original Security Supervisor who encouraged him not to do the stunt and hired someone else who was willing to let him perform the stunt as he had always envisioned it.
Tom Cruise’s role in Legend is a worthy entry in his filmography, but is a far cry from his most iconic films such as Top gun or his continued tenure with the Mission: Impossible franchise.
In LegendTom Cruise portrays a forest child called Jack who is tasked with fighting the Dark Lord (Tim Curry) after he sends his menacing goblins called Blix (Alice Playten), Pox (Peter O’ Farrell), and Blunder (Kiran Shah) to kill the unicorns near his castle. By killing the mystical creatures and stealing their horns, the Lord of Darkness can put the forest in a perpetual state of darkness while everyone lives under his oppressive rule.
Jack, smitten with Princess Lily (Mia Sara), is unaware of the Dark Lord’s evil intentions when he brings the innocent princess to see the unicorns in person, which sets Legend primary conflict is moving. This ultimate convergence of evil and innocence introduces us to magical creatures called Honeythorn Gump (David Bennent), Oona (Annabelle Lanyon), Screwball (Billy Barty), and Brown Tom (Cork Hubbert), who are all helps Tom Cruise’s Jack thwart the darkness. forces that await them in Legend.
That is the unfortunate reality we have to deal with Legend the legacy is almost swept under the rug, as it is not available to see at home streaming or video on demand. If you have a friend with an extensive DVD collection, you better hope you’re in their good graces, or at least allow you to borrow a copy for your viewing pleasure. Tom Cruise may not be a fan of Legendbut a witness to the ever charismatic Tim Curry in full devil make-up in the third act of the film is reason enough to check out this alleged wonderful evil that features a young Tom Cruise prominently.
