Three men were arrested in Japan for trying to smuggle crabs from the country.
The suspects, aged 24, 26 and 27, and widely identified in Japanese media as citizens of the Chinese, were detained on Amami, the Southern Island, where spiral crustaceans.
Authorities were warned about the men’s live cargo when the hotel officers who were asked to care for the luggage were noticed as the suitcases that create a “shola -sh”, police said local media.
After that, the officers discovered “thousands” crabs, weighing about 95 kg. The third person was found to have another 65 kg in another set of three suitcases.
“Our investigation is ongoing to determine whether they had (crabs) to sell them or keep them as pets or eat them,” a police secretary said after arrest on Wednesday. “We are considering all the opportunities.”
Police said the Punel crabs were a “national treasure”, which was part of the plants and the variety of animals on the island of Amami.
Punel crabs are so called because they cleanse shells to live – you can regularly see on the beaches of the popular tourist direction.
Crabs can cost up to 20,000 (£ 103), Japan Times reports.
