Three Israelis were killed in a Palestinian attack in the West Bank of the Jordan River

Three Israelis were killed and eight wounded in a Palestinian attack on a bus and other vehicles in the northern occupied West Bank, the Israeli military and medics said.

Magen David Adom EMS identified the dead as two women in their 60s and a man in his 40s. The bus driver was seriously injured.

The Israeli military said “terrorists” opened fire on vehicles near the village of al-Funduk, located on Highway 55, and then fled the scene.

Israeli media, citing a military official, said the attackers were two Palestinians and that security forces were pursuing them, setting up roadblocks and cordoning off several towns in the area.

Paramedic Magen David Adom Avichai Ben Tsurya described it as “a very serious attack that spread along the road involving several vehicles.”

“We conducted a quick search and identified two women and a man in private vehicles with no pulse, suffering from serious gunshot wounds. We had no choice but to declare them dead on the spot,” he said in a statement.

“Inside the bus, we treated victims of gunshots and broken windows, including the bus driver, who was conscious and suffered gunshot wounds, and other victims in a mild to moderate condition.”

The wounded were evacuated to two hospitals in the center of Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to bring to justice what he called “heinous killers” and anyone who helped them.

“No one will leave,” he wrote on X.

There were no immediate claims from Palestinian armed groups, although Hamas hailed the attack as a “heroic response against (Israel’s) ongoing crimes, including the war in Gaza.”

Hundreds of Palestinians and dozens of Israelis have been killed in a surge of violence in the West Bank since the war began, sparked by a deadly attack by Hamas in southern Israel on October 7, 2023.

On Sunday, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said that two Palestinians – a 17-year-old boy and a 40-year-old man – were killed by Israeli forces in the West Bank.

The teenager was shot dead during an Israeli raid on the Askar refugee camp near the city of Nablus, which is 10 km (6 miles) east of Al-Funduk, the report said.

The Israeli military said that its troops fired at people who threw explosives at them in the Nablus area, according to Reuters. It added that “the impact has been identified” and that the incident is under review.

The man was killed in the town of Meitaloon, 21 km northeast of al-Funduk, where the Israeli military said Border Police officers killed an armed suspect in a wider operation that also arrested 19 others.
