All good things have to end – even tremendous British popular crime shows That serves as comfort food for anglophiles like me.
GrantchesterThe long -standing ITV mystery series currently streaming on a PBS masterpiece, ends after season 11, and mysterious nerds are everywhere in grief.
The bright side is that the show wrap up season 10, so we still have one more season to look forward to and over 60 episodes to re -watch.
If you are a newbie or are already a fan, here are a few reasons why you should look at Grantchester.

Stop me if you’ve heard this joke before: “A cop and a priest walks into a bar…” Grantchester Takes the start of that joke and turns it into a show for a family found. Set during the 1950s in the ideal hamlet of Grantchester, the series follows Detective Geordie Keating (Robson Green) As he resolves crimes – usually murders – with the vicar of the town.
Of seasons 1-4, that was Sidney chambers (Black mirror‘S. James Norton), A free -minded Anglican who liked to listen to jazz and did not oppose romance. Sidney eventually left in season 4 and passed the torch, er, Cassock I Will Davenport (Superman a final Tom Brittney), who loved his motorcycle almost as much as the God he worshiped. Will left after season 8 and Alphy Kottaram replaced him (Rishi nair), whose South Asian Indian ethnicity makes him stand out among the inhabitants of the white lily of the small town in England.

Whoever has paired with, Keating establishes a professional and personal connection with the vicar, and this relationship that makes Grantchester So fun to watch. The Conservative Keating does not always come along with his religious partner, but recognizes his need for guidance – forensic as well as spiritual – when he needs him most.

This odd couple pairing is also a great comedy source. He hoot seeing Keating dragged to a jazz club by Sidney or rolled his eyes so that he will suffer another barrier in his love life. With a priest as a main character, you would expect him to be the straight man, the stick in the mud, the rock; Instead, Sidney/Will/Alphy is often the source of all the romantic melodrama that occurs throughout the series.
I appreciate that. Grantchester makes his faith men completely human and lacking without ridicule. And while Keating can be critical, it’s not one to cast the first stone and leave someone behind. Grantchester He has his fair share of crime and mysteries, but at his root, he is a play for two men who link together because of their differences. Geordie likes that his priest’s partner is a little idiosyncratic, while Sidney/Will/Alphy appreciates Geordie for his stability and loyalty.

There’s a reason why Grantchester He continued for over a decade, due to his stellar cast of former television and fresh faces. Robson Green has been on the small British screen since the early ’90s, but his geordie is the role he will be most remembered for. His detective has seen a lot, but he is not too cynical to appreciate Sidney’s charm, will will or Alphy’s insightful observations. Robson lets you see the soft center behind Geordie’s hard shell, making it a copy you would want on your side if you are wrongly charged with murder. (Hey, it happens.)
Like the leading priests, each actor brings something different to the role. Norton Sidney made a romantic hero, a sexual priest long before Andrew ScottS in Fleabag. who fought for the Isdog and pinched for his true married (!) Love (!!!). Brittney’s will was more rock, a preacher who was not afraid to put some swagger in his sermons, while Alphy Nair was more reserved and suspicious because of his outside status.
Cast changes usually spell Doom for a series; just compare the Kim cattrall-Heb And just like that with Sex and the city To see how damaging it can be when an original star does not return for another season. But Granchester Made him work because the three priests offered something unique that essentially restarted the series every few years. With the advent of will and then Alphy, we get to know them slowly and see how all the other regular characters respond to them.
James Norton in Grantchester
ITVYou might think it’s a little strange that I barely mentioned what Grantchester Apparently around – murder. Yes, the show has its fair share of corps to be discovered and mysteries to solve, but that’s not why I’m still coming back to it. For all the crimes it includes, Grantchester is a very comforting show to watch, one that clears any dissatisfaction I have about life in the present.
That is because of the cast, which also covers Tessa Peake-Jones‘Saucy Housekeper, Mrs. C, and Al weaverThere is a priest of Jittery’s parish, clumsy and intimate, Leonard, but also his time and location. The show starts in the 1950s and is currently set in the mid -1960s, which gives me some break from mobile phones, social media feeders and other modern headaches.

The series is being shot at some of the most beautiful places in Britain, including Cambridge, West Sussex, London and, of course, Grantchester. The show depicts life moving at a slower speed, with town meetings, baking sales and picnics occupying some of the characters’ social activities. Is it idealized? Probably but Grantchester It doesn’t make the mistake that everything is perfect. It addresses the issues of racism, sexism and homophobia directly, and does not pretend that this age is filled with flawed people and ways of thinking.

Still, Grantchester is a welcome break from 2025, and has a cast of characters that feel like a second family. Whenever he sings, I always tune in to see what Georgie and Company do, Sidney’s latest romance, Mrs.’s newest grievance. C And, yes, a new mystery that needs to be solved.
In the world GrantchesterJustice, order and compassion are always overwhelmed. I’ll miss him more than I care to admit.
You can stream all ten seasons of Grantchester on a PBS masterpiece.
