This is the worst team in Manchester United’s history admits Amorim after the Brighton defeat

Ruben Amorim admitted it was perhaps “the worst team in Manchester United’s history” after this afternoon’s 3-1 defeat by Brighton.

United were second best against the Seagulls and remain rooted to 13th in the Premier League after a sixth defeat in nine league games.

Yankuba Minteh put Brighton ahead and, although Bruno Fernandes equalized from the penalty spot, Kauro Mitoma and Georginio Rutter added second-half goals for Fabian Hurzeler’s side.

Amorim then sought to outline the size of the task facing United now closer to the relegation zone than the top four.

He said: “Imagine that for a Manchester United fan, imagine that for me.

“You have a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. Imagine that. We have to survive this moment. I know that.

“We are being perhaps the worst team in the history of Manchester United. I know you want headlines, but I say this because we have to recognize it and change it. So there you go, your headline.”

It’s hard to explain – Amorim

United have picked up just 11 points from Amorim’s 11 games since succeeding Erik ten Hag in November.

The Portuguese added: “It’s difficult to explain, we have to recognize the moment and not turn the problem around.

“Everyone here underperforms, regardless of the circumstances. Losing so many games is unacceptable for any club in the Premier League, never mind Manchester United. It’s a very tough time but we have to carry on.

“The rivals are better than us in many details. That we cannot be consistent. That I’m not helping my players right now.

“It’s a hard time. We must admit that we are in a very difficult situation. All the bad records, losing games at home, losing in the Premier League, we’re underperforming.”

“The fans will suffer”

Amorim said he will stick with his preferred methods even if it means more pain in the short term.

He told Sky Sports: “It’s clear. I’m not going to change how I see the game, I’m clear about that.

“The players will suffer, the fans will suffer, I’m sorry. I have a way of doing things, but we have to survive this moment. It’s very clear to everyone what we’re going to do.”
