Part of what makes Fox Mulder so great X-Files A character is that he is cool and collected; The type of guy who can face aliens and sewer monsters and still get a few wipes in before saving the day. David Duchovny is usually as similar as Zen as his Mulder character, but he ended out freaked out by one of the show’s biggest guest stars. That star was Doug Hutchison (who played the extended villain Eugene Tooms), who insisted on playing his climatic scene naked, a decision that stunned Duchovny when he had to act alongside a naked monster man, covered with a slimy.
Tooms, the bare horror
In the highlight of the episode “Tooms,” Mulder finds and faces the titular villain, found hidden, naked and coated with goo, under the steps of center water. It was not the writers’ idea to make the villain naked, but Hutchison insisted on pulling down for the last scene because it made more sense to his animal character. Like Showrunner Chris Carter The nakedness later removed, that scene made much more terrifying to Duchovny: in his words, “David was very nervous about being in a slightly cramped place with a naked man.”
Much of this information, including Carter’s memories of Duchovny, comes from the special features of DVD from The X-Files Season 1 set. There, the Showrunner revealed more Mulder actor’s thoughts on acting alongside Hutchison’s naked form. About “Tooms,” revealed that “the thing I felt worst about was that David Duchovny Did I have to enter this elevator shaft with the naked, greasy, angry, sweaty man and have to … pretend he was afraid of it, which was probably an easy part. “
While Carter felt bad at first for putting his star through this suffering, he eventually decided that it was all for the best. The showrunner believed that the “little discomfort… added to the scene” partly because Duchovny “was really nervous about being in a slightly cramped place with a naked man.” However, “he made the scare, the creep, all more real,” meaning that the fear of Duchovny was shared by almost everyone watching “Tooms” and seeing his naked fear (AHEM).
But while the X-Files Showrunner concluded that the nudity was a great idea, the man he originally proposed the idea regretted. Actor Tooms Eugene, Doug Hutchison, had his wish to perform the scene naked, but he also got something else: The Cold. In his words, “I was ill as a dog and naked as a jaybird and I got this icy cold scum on my part.”
Continuing, the actor described his discomfort in terms of a very obvious detail: “I was literally clinging all over everything and everything was sticking to me,” he said. “I had a lint in the most preposterous places on my body,” he said before concluding that the whole experience of shooting this scene was “really a kind of gross.” While the guest star paints an extremely live picture here, much of this is not surprising exactly … after all, anyone who had seen the tooms character naked and covered with Goo can easily imagine how much the actor would stick to almost every face around him.
This whole story is very illuminated because it shows how many different creative factors are going to make great X-Files Episode. Tooms’ character would not have been naked if the actor had not demanded on him and Chris Carter had not signed on him; In the meantime, the climatic scene would not have been effective if Duchovny was not released correctly according to its proximity to a naked guard, covered with slimy playing a functional immortal cannibal. It all came together and raised the episode… but really, what else did you expect from an episode that turned escalator into a fatal weapon?
