Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook sued President Donald Trump for trying to fire it, creating a potential legal battle for the US Central Bank autonomy.
Cook asked the court to declare the order to firing Trump “illegal and invalid”, as well as named after the Fed Jerome Powell and the Governors’ Council as defendants.
Trump stated that there were “sufficient reasons” to believe that Cook had made a mortgage and cited constitutional powers, which, he said, allowed him to remove it.
The president relinged pressure on the Fed because he sees as a reluctance to reduce interest rates. Cook is part of the Council responsible for installing interest rates in the US.
The lawsuit on Thursday will probably arise a number of legal issues that may be in the US Supreme Court.
“In this case, an unprecedented and illegal attempt by President Trump, which, if allowed, is the first in the history of the Council,” the prosecutor wrote in the lawsuit.
“This will disrupt the Law on the Federal Reserve … which clearly requires the show of the” cause “to remove the governor, which is required by the private mortgage statement provided by the governor Cook before confirming her Senate,” Lowell wrote.
The White House press secretary, Kush, told the BBC that the president “had his legitimate powers to remove” the chef.
“The president has determined that there is an opportunity to remove the governor who was reliably accused of lying in financial documents from a very sensitive position that control financial institutions,” he said. “Removing the governor due to improves the accountability and authority of the federal reserve service for both markets and American people.”
The accusations against Cook were first put in a public letter from the housing regulator Bill Pulte, an ally of Trump. In a letter, he accused Cook of falsifying records of receiving a mortgage.
The letter states that she had signed two documents, two weeks, testifying that two houses in different states were her main residence. No accusations were charged, and it is unclear whether it was under investigation.
Cook’s lawsuit does not consider these allegations.
It is one of the seven members of the Fed Council, and in this position is a 12-member committee, which is responsible for installing interest rates in the United States.
From the time of returning to Washington, Trump has extended pressure on the Fed – especially Powell – over interest rates.
