The United States officially called Colombia a country that “demonstratively failed” to defend its drug control obligations, but stopped turning off the stream of US assistance to Colombia.
Each year, the US government officially certifies whether several countries working with us run by the United States and those who are revealed wanting to risk shortening the US financing.
On Monday, Trump’s administration said the production of cocaine in Colombia increased by high records under the left president Gustav Petro, whom the Columbia leader denied.
In response, the Colombian government said he would stop buying weapons in the US.
Interior Minister Armanda Benedetti told local radio that his government would stop buying US weapons “from that moment.”
The other countries that the United States did not reach their goals were Afghanistan, Bolivia, Myanmar and Venezuela.
Colombia has been added to the list for the first time since 1997.
This step is likely to be further acidic relations between the left government and the Trump administration.
President Petro went to social media to respond to the US accusation that during his stay as an area planted by Coca bushes, and the production of cocaine reached a record level.
Coccal leaves are a key ingredient in cocaine, and Colombia has long become the leading manufacturer of illegal drugs.
A poll by the United Nations Office and Crime (UNSOC) showed that Coca Bush cultivation increased by 10% in 2023. The figures for 2024 must be released next month.
But Petro insisted that he was during the government of Ivan Duke, his predecessor as he led from 2018 to 2022, in the area planted by Coca, there is a large increase.
According to data published by the Colombian Presidency, record 1764 tons of cocaine were confiscated by government security forces since August 2022, when Peter came to the post and November 2024. Drug attacks continue at a high level in 2025, according to official tals.
Peter also stated that in order for COCA growing, it was necessary for the demand for cocaine to go down to the US and Europe.
On the other hand, the United States firmly guilty at the Peter door, saying that the president’s peace talks with several armed groups – many of which finance themselves by trading drugs – hindered drug fight.
“His unsuccessful attempts to seek housing with drug-terrorist groups have only worsened the crisis,”- Presidential determination presented by the US Congress, reported.
The document continues to praise the “skill and courage” of Colombia’s security for the confrontation between criminal groups.
Then it came to the conclusion that “Colombia’s inability to fulfill its drug control obligations over the past year rests solely with its political leadership.”
However, this leaves the door open to the re -introduction of Colombia when its government “takes more aggressive measures to eradicate coca and cuts in the production of cocaine and trafficking in human beings.”
And although the rhetoric, which leaves Washington, clearly angered President Peter, his government will also be relieved that the declaration did not reduce the stream of assistance in the US, says BBC News Mundo in Bogota, Jose Carlos Kueta.
The development of Colombia is coming at a time when President Trump has fought with “drug-terrorist” priority.
Monday he announced The US military has destroyed allegedly Venezuelan narcotic vessel In international waters on the Southern Caribbean.
Trump said three people, Trump said.
He added that the United States recorded evidence that the boats belonged to drug-terrorist groups but have not yet made these evidence public.
