According to security sources, there was a former defense minister and a vocal critic of the Government Tag, Margarita Gnocad.
Gnocada, the daughter -in -law of the long -standing leader Farre Gnosingbe, recently called for resignation and urged the military to stand with people in decades of dynastic control.
“She was arrested for serious actions, including her recent public appearance, which fired the military before the uprising,” AFP police source said. Local media reported that she had been arrested by security forces in her home in Lama’s capital on Wednesday.
Recently, Togo was deprived of deadly protests calling on Gnassingbé to retire and release political prisoners.
Protests have occurred amid popular anger and increasing fatigue with a family regime for six decades. Gnosingbe, who has led the country since 2005, has changed his father Gnosingbe Eyadem, who has ruled 38 years since 1967.
The new constitutional structure that allowed Gnassingbé to extend its detention in power, moving to the new role of the President of the Council of Ministers, further fueled the protests.
Gnassingbé was oath in a new position in May, which is the highest position in the government’s executive power and has no official restrictions.
In recent months, Gnakadé has written articles criticizing Gnosingbe, including calling him to resign and give way to “peaceful, inclusive and national transition”. She also supported the protest against his leadership.
Gnocade, the widow of Ernest Gnosingbe, the late brother of Farre Gnosingbe, held the post of Minister of Defense from 2020 to 2022.
She was one of the first women to hold such a strategic position of government, and her vocal criticism of the government comes as a significant shift.
The news of her arrest became viral in social media.
It is currently being questioned by the authorities. Some reports believe that allegedly connections with the exiled figures of the opposition and attempts to incite disobedience in the armed forces.
One of the security sources told the BBC that in the barracks against her arrest was “general discomfort because it helped improve the working and life conditions of the soldiers when she was a defense minister.”
Some sources show that it may be accused of actions that may endanger the stability of the military institution.
These accusations are serious crimes when they are proven, and, according to the court system, it may face imprisonment within 10 to 20 years when they are found guilty.
It is expected that in the coming days there will be more clarity about the exact reasons for the arrest of Gnocad.
On Wednesday, a group of opposition parties and a group of civil society Touche Pas a Ma Constritation (do not touch my constitution) condemned its arrest, saying that it was carried out by “security officers” without a warrant.
“Once again, this abuse of power that characterizes the practice of the retrograde regime. The goal is to silence a dissenters,” the statement reads.
The group demanded that its immediate release without conditions, as well as freedom for all detainees for their political reasons.
Movement under the guidance of youth, known as the M66, also gave a 72-hour ultimatum demanding to release, warning that they will call for nationwide demonstrations unless done.
“Tagalezian people are tired of () arrests of dissident votes. What is worse is that (Gnocad) is a former defense minister, and the Armed Forces do nothing … The movement does not refuse, despite all the threats,” said Micozi, one of the M66 leaders.
In June, at least seven people were killed in protest rally against Tagalez’s leader, civil rights said. The bodies were removed from rivers in the capital.
However, the government denied death related to protests.
