Even earlier Star Wars: Skeleton Crew was released, the fans stayed Curious by Jod Na Nawood. In the show, the scoundrel of many namesplayed by Jude Law, he delightfully toes the line between roguish hero and diabolical pirate. And while he seemed Recently opened a switch in Lanupa after betraying the crew, many fans still expected that it was all a ruse. Well, in the penultimate episode of the series, “We’re in So Much Trouble,” Jod finally showed his true colors and we loved it.
Then a very funny sequence of parents trying to get an At Attin message, which included many, many of those iconic circulars. Star Wars stun blasts, we caught up with the crew finally on their way home. Unfortunately for them though, Brutus and his pirates arrive first. There, they tell Jod that if he doesn’t finally deliver a treasure, he’s dead.
Unable to break through the intimidating and deadly barrier surrounding the planet, Jod comes up with a plan. The children arrive in the new and improved Onyx Cinderso Jod tells the pirates that the ship is the key to getting to the planet. Catch it and try to board it. You might assume that the children would just give up, but these are not the same children who left the planet. They have changed. They are more capable. And with a little prank, they are able to capture the pirate leader Brutus, scaring the rest of his followers. However, a person is not afraid. It’s Jod. And in arguably the most surprising and brutal moment of the entire series so far, Jod shoots a helpless and defenseless Brutus in the head with a blaster, claiming his pirate crew for himself.
When Jod figures out what to do next, the kids get this message from their parents. It gives them new hope and, with a little help from SM-33, they are able to escape the pirates and fly through the barrier. They are home free, or so they think. But nope: Jod got away and soon took control of the ship, using the lightsaber he got in Tak Rennod’s vault to cut off the head of 33. Then he proceeded to threaten the children with slow murder and painful for their parents if they don’t shut up and let them do their thing. This, coupled with the elimination of Brutus, finally turned the tide for Jod. He is in it for himself. He is not a hero. He is a bad, smelly, murderous pirate.
Which is amazing, right? Assuming it sticks in the final episode, we love that the show’s big bad has been staring us in the face from the start. Jod was never a full-on hero, but he did heroic things to help children, as well as himself. And yet, the fact that he still had all these aliases and a latent Force ability made him extra cagey and formidable. We hope that he was a good man, but it is much more satisfying for the show itself that it will not be. At least, not yet. Give the kids a real threat to (hopefully) defeat.
Perform the Onyx Cinder is really from At Attin, his arrival puts into play a new protocol. The higher ups on the planet don’t know that Jod is a pirate who arrives with the missing children. I believe he is an emissary of the Republic arriving for a shipment of gold. Which is a bit too convenient for us, the viewer, but works perfectly for Jod. It is brought right into a huge and impressive series of vaults (1,139 in fact) full of credits from the Old Republic. It is the treasure that he and every pirate has always dreamed of. And he found it. He is a legend.
At this point, the families were notified that the children had returned and were being reunited. It’s a touching moment, but it’s quickly interrupted by Jod, who pulls out his lightsaber to let them know who’s still in charge. “We Are So Much Trouble” finally brought the Skeleton Crew back to At Attin, finally revealed that Jod was the real villain we hoped he wasn’t, and pulled the curtain ever so slightly on the truths of the planet. It is literally full of gold. For what? To what end? And how will the crew save the day? Another episode to find out.
