When Trey Parker and Matt Stone went on to produce 2004’s American team: World PoliceTheir main aim was railways on celebrities, including, but not limited to: Michael Moore, George Clooney, Ethan Hawke, and, of course, Matt Damon. Although the South Park creators had no qualifications about making fun of actors like Sean Penn for their righteous anger whenever he would talk about politics with a swollen sense of self, the reason for them to portray Matt Damon as a carrot who could only say his own name (Mattttttttttttttttttttttttnnn) when he was encouraged to speak at Malice at All. In fact, the only reason that Matt Damon was portrayed in such a way in American team: World Police was because the puppet designed with his similarity in mind “looks a kind of mental deficiency” according to Matt Stone.
That is, the puppet they made looked involved, Parker and Stone didn’t have enough time to get a new one made before production, and they only ran with the joke.
Gotta work with what you have
Explaining why Matt Damon suffered such a silly joke American team: World PoliceMatt Stone has gone on record saying “I think Matt Damon is a very talented actor, and I’ve met him before and is a great man.” If Matt Damon’s puppet had come out of the oven looking different than the model we are familiar with, he probably had a regular talking role, but he didn’t. Compared to Parker and Stone Beef with Michael Moore, ripped off South Park‘S. Animation for sequence in Bowling for Columbinetheir injections against Matt Damon’s American team: World Police were born out of logistical necessity, all of which are a good fun name.
Matt Damon appreciates the joke, but did not understand it
In Ama Reddit in 2014, Matt Damon was asked about his character’s portrait at American team: World Policeand was amazingly cool for being a famous puppet version of South Park Timmy, who is also mentally disadvantaged and only when talking to his own name can say his own name.
During the Ama, Matt Damon said he was confused by American team: World Police Because the imitations of other celebrities were the actual views of their intended subjects that aimed to have fun in their established public personas. Damon, not knowing that his character was inspired directly creating his puppet botched (and literally nothing else), was instinctively for a moment because he believed that the public actually thought he was an idiot despite the fact that he had established himself as a filmmaker, actor and qualified screen writer.
In the same breath, Matt Damon said he believed Trey Parker and Matt Stone were geniusists, and he obviously took the joke in stage, not only because he trusted their artistic instinct, but because they were also friends in real life.
Since then Matt Damon has heard Trey Parker and Matt Stone’s explanation for creating his puppet in American team: World PoliceSo at least he can easily sleep knowing that the only reason he was the barrel of the joke was due to the design of an unfortunate prop who took his own life.
