The President of the University of Columbia Claire Shipman was subjected to the graduates’ ceremony on Tuesday, and the “free Mahmoud” singing heard her muted.
Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate of the University of Colombia, was detained in March by US immigration officials because of his role in pro-Plestine protests on the campus. He is a permanent legal resident of the United States and is not accused of crime.
Mr. Khalil remains in custody in the US, and the official seeks to deport him.
